Subject: locking torque converter manually?
IP: Logged

Message:

Anybody know anything about modifying your truck so you can manually lock the torque converter?

I've seen two brief articles about it on the web. Seems easy enough. What's the downside?

Here are a couple of links:
http://www.outdoorwire.com/4x4/dodge/tech/tc_lockup/

http://earthroamer.com/main_truck/truck_transmission.html

Anybody done this to a Dakota?

I have thought about doing this, for towing, and as far as I know all you would have to do is find the wire that controls the torque converter lockup and ground that wire then the torque convertor would be locked as soon as you hit the switch. BD power builds a kit for this on the cummins Dodges. I don't know how it would affect quarter mile times though have to do some research.

The outdoorwire.com article tells you where to wire in the switch. Looks pretty straightforward. That's what got me thinking there must be a downside or else everybody would be doing it.

I'm not interested in 1/4 mile times. I want to used it for slow hill descents offroad. I think the BD switch disengages when your speed drops below 25mph. So that won't work for me. I want to crawl downhill at walking speed.

I think the biggest downside is that when you forget to turn it off and try and stop it will kill the engine just like not pushing in the clutch. Good idea on the hill descents. I own a 4x4v as well.

It works...we've already done this on a '99, '00, and '01 model. All you have is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear...no OD and the convertor is locked.

Hey Bernd, what do you mean no OD? Does the convertor only locks on OD in standard mode? How slow can you go with the convertor locked after doing the conversion?

Bernd, are the instructions at:
http://www.outdoorwire.com/4x4/dodge/tech/tc_lockup/
accurate? They say to remove the relay permantly. That sounds hinky to me.

All we did was tap into the wire...didn't remove anything at all (didn't need to).

The converter slips in the other gears as well...especially from the 2-3 shift (as noticed by quite a few others). When you use this simple trick, it simulates a "locked" converter and the OD is bypassed.

I have a 1990 Dodge van conversion with a 518T tranny. I want to install a manual lockup switch for down hill towing. All of the wiring jobs that I have seen are for diesel rigs not gas. Help!!

A lockup torque converter such as my 518T has a clutch that engages when "on the gas" to provide a full mechanical train from engine to the road. But to prevent a stall at stops, the designers took tyhe easy way and put in a solenoid that unlocks the clutch whenever you are "off the gas".

The problem is that when going down hills with a towed load in first or second the clutch is unlocked and the compression load results in slippage in the converter since it is riding on the fluid. This causes excess heat in the tranny.

With a lockup bypass wiring job the clutch is locked up on acceleration and deceleration which
allows better load hauling.
