my truck is a 98 dak 4cyl.... im having some problems out of it and i have checked everything i can think of and i figured maybe someone on here would be able to help me out... what is happening is when it is cold or when i slow down coming to a red light it cuts out like it is trying to die... also when i have the heater on or radio on it does it... i have had the battery tested and the alternator tested as well... the guys at the parts store are dumbasses so they couldnt help me... any help would be greatly appreciated thanks brandon

On the Magnum V6 and V8 engines, there is the idle air controller that gets clogged up with soot and stuff. When this happens, it causes an eratic idle and when bad enough it won't idle at all. On those engines, it is a device attached to the back of the throttle body and can easily be removed via two torx screws and wiped clean. Sometimes it needs to be replaced though.

I don't know about your four cylinder; though, it could be similar.

I don't know about why it would do it with the A/C and radio on.

It's got several names depending on manufacturer:
Idle Air Bypass
Idle Air Control
Air Bypass Valve
And like that.
It's connected to the throttle body, because it bypasses the throttle plate when you're idling or take you foot off the gas so the engine won't die.

I dunno, still sounds like a battery going bad to me. Especially when xtra electical demands are placed on it and it dies. When my battery was going bad it was hard to keep running when cold and died at stop signs unless I kept the rpms up with the gas. I've had auto battery shop test a battery once and they said it was good but it turned out it wasn't. So you never know. All problems cleared up when I put a new battery in mine. If your battery is 3yrs old or more it may just be going out.

That doesn't seem correct to me.

The battery is really only there to start the engine. Once the motor is running; the alternator powers everything, including recharging the battery. I've never tried it; but I don't see why you couldn't just unhook the battery once the motor is started. It is the same thing if your battery is reading Zero volts, you get a jump from another car and what happens then? You are driving around with a completely dead battery; and everything still works because it is running off the current from the alternator just like always.


The car dying from extra electrical demands would be an electrical problem with the alternator. Something that could possibly be diagnosed while the car is running. Just check the voltage at the battery terminals with it running. The voltage should read around 13.8 to 14.2 volts I think. I'd have someone else turn on the headlights with brights and other high amp eletrical things one thing at a time to see if the voltage drops below what it originally read. If the voltage progressively gets lower and lower and stays that way, it is probably the alternator or some other electrical problem.


Now sometimes though. Something can get screwed up inside the battery itself that can probably damage the alternator or other parts associated with the charging system and cause weird problems like above. That should easily be diagnosed with checking the battery voltage though. If I remember right? the battery should read at least 12.2 volts with the car off.

What was the charging voltage ? The PCM forgets idle memory on initial start when voltage to PCM is too low - but since you're not saying this happens mainly on first starting, I'd suspect the IAC.

Hi. I also had this problem with some of my past cars. After trying everything with no fix. A BRICK hit me in the head.ha,ha I noticed the ground wire from the engine block to the frame was very rusted and falling apart. I replaced it and the problrm was fixed.It never stalled with everything electrical running on again. Just sand the frame/engine connections points to get a good ground.

The PCM runs off the battery not the alernator.
The battery must be load tested to tell if it really is bad, a weak battery will cause problems
such as above.
