 Subject: auto tranny sump filter

today i had my trans flushed, the people at dodge said i didn't need to replace the sump filter, the manual says to replace it, any opinions on this?

I recommend anytime any transmission fluid is changed, that you use a new filter. Especially if it was flushed; because that process can deposit a whole lot more dirt into the filter in a short time. That small filter there is somthing you DO NOT want plugged :-)

Also, you may have two filters in your 45RFE.
There is the standard filter, but also a spin-on filter that does the cooler return. I think it is only applicable on trucks with factory tow package.

where is the spin on filter located at on the cooler return? since i didn't have the sump filter replaced, i'll just replace that and hope nothing bad happens. Next time i'll just follow the manuel. does the cooler always have fluid running through it or only when the tranny fluid gets to a certain temp?

It is inside the pan...sorry to say.
Cooler is always in circuit.

Just where would this dirt be hiding inside of a trans.?
When it is "flushed" it is done through the cooler line connections. It is a fluid exchange.

Some AT flushing machines "back flush" the filters. This is supposed to clean the filters, but in all reality, it only sends all filters crap it into the tranny.
Every time the fluid is replaced the filters should be replaced also. What's going to keep the new fluid clean,,, dirty filters which are partially plugged. This is why they change the oil filter everytime the oil is changed in the engine?
I can tell you why they didn't change the filters,,, they were LAZY! Instead of doing the entire job which requires dropping the tranny pan, replacing the filters and resealing it, the hooked up thier flushing maching, swapped the fluid and took $150.
Go back and have them changee your engine oil,,, then ask if they need to change the filter,,, then question them as to why the oil filter needs to be replaced. After letting them carry on for 5 minutes as to the mandatory requirement of changing the oil filter,,, ask them why they didn't change the filters in your transmission.
I'd be pissed,,, guess that's why I don't go to the dealer anymore...
