For anyone who cares, just finished a 1100 mile road trip for the holidays, average M.P.G., 18. To say I am pleased would be a huge understatement. Alot of this trip was in 5th on cruise control between 55-75, but also spent close to 2 hours in 4hi trying to get through black ice and snow in some steep mountain passes, and upon destination showing off to my bro. and in general, while I was driving for M.P.G., on a few occassions I let it rip! and rip it does! just a F.Y.I.

Excellent ! Was that an increase for you ? I went from 15 with the 3.55s to almost 16 with the 4.10 ratio.

WOW. I barely got 18 stock on the highway.

I wonder how much less your CC weighs than my QC?

I averaged 13 MPG on my last tank full :)

But the truck is not used to go to work. I use it after work and on weekends. So how do you think I drive it???

So far no long trips with it except when I towed the toy hauler, which was 9 MPG pulling between 7,000 and 8,000 Lbs.

What I was wondering, was how much LESS your CC may weigh to my QC, that's all :)


Like I said, I haven't driven PROPERLY to get a PROPER average MPG rating since the gear swap. I have ONLY driven in town except when I towed.
13MPG mixed, with my driving is pretty good I think :P

Graph, no big deal.If I didn't say it before, I will say it now. Had my heart set on 4:10, thought 4:56 was way to much gear, not alot of Dakota owners with much gear. You posted about your swap to 4:56, and I copied you. Best friggin mod to date! now I am worried about my clutch

did you use a trip computer to get your MPG? not calling you a liar but in 4 hi for 2 hours and having 4.56 gears traveling 55 to 75 the whole trip I cant see how you got 18 MPG. I know on my stock QC when I put it in 4 hi I watch the needle drop and thats with 3.55 gears so I could imagine with 4.56 gears in 4 hi.

I got mine back to 18 after putting german castrol 0w-30 syn motor oil in it. I just did a 160 mile trip and used 8.6 gallons. I got 18 MPG. where as I drove down I used almost a half tank of gas where as I only used a quarter on the way back.

it might be its a CC but I see so many people with cc giving about the same nnumbers I do with my QC.


maybe next time not adding all the miles and all the gallons you used for the whole trip and just fig out after each fill up your numbers will be much different. I think he is figuring in gas he isnt using after the trip was over.

I am not sure why people keep saying that the 3.55's get bad mileage and therefore the 4.56 must be worse.

Yes, 4.56 will rev the engine more and use more fuel, but at the same time they decrease the load the engine see's and use less fuel per rev. In the case of the dakota, especially with the larger 31" tires the amount of fuel saved per rev more than makes up for the fuel used in the extra revs. Especially since the engine runs more efficient at 2500 rpm than 1800.

Tada, better mileage.

I have noticed the MPG varies all over, diff people, diff driving, different areas/fuel, etc
So it's easily possible for him to get that MPG while someone gets worse.

I dont have gears liek that nor do I know anyone with gears liek that. so I cant say no he didnt period. I look fwd to what you get GraphiteDak when yo udo a trip and see how close you get to him. I am just courious thats all.

yo uthink the new 6 speed auto dodge came out would work good for gears like that

I have the '05 Dakota 4.7L 5speed auto QC with 3.92's 4x2

I just did a trip of about 500 miles driving at a consistant 70mph and received 18.2MPG. I got these figures from the overhead console.

The truck is stock except for a K&N air filter and I run Mobile 1 5w30 synthetic with a K&N oil filter.

I only have about 6,000 miles on the truck so far and no issues.

Not sure how you would get 18MPG with a 4.56 diff.
Maybe if these things had the displacement on demand option! haha.

Really sorry I started this thread, but when you drive close to 20 hours you get a little bored. Out of curiousity and boredom, figured I would pay attention to M.P.G. I am very comfortable with my calculations and just thought I would pass on some info since this gear swap is kind of radical. F.Y.I. do you think I would drive a lifted v8 4x4 if I cared about M.P.G.? Around town it sucks, might have something to do with rate of acceleration and the fact I have been smoking rear tires to check LSD. Now put it in 5th purring along 2-2.5 k RPM for HOURS at a time

Maybe crow318 has it right. Maybe this little 4.7 is more efficient at 2500 RPM than 1800 RPM, doesn't matter to me, bought the gears for performance, and perform they do, great mod!

Some of us have already figured the 4.7 must be more efficient at higher revs, at least to a point. Several of us noticed an increase in milage going from 3.55 to 4.10. For those of you who don't understand how lower gears could get better milage (and it surprised me too), that would explain it.

Never said I didint beleive you, just surprised.

When I ordered my truck i went with the 3.92 instead of 3.55 because I was told the 4.7 was "happier" at higher revs. I was also told the mileage difference would be around 1mpg less I just expected a lower gear to get worse mileage.

Now that I know you can get decent mileage with lower gears with the 4.7, if I ever have to replace the diff I wont hesitate to purchase 4.10's or 4.56's
