Message: why would i want one???
i have a 400 cubic inch big block. It achieves big cubic inches with a huge bore (biggest factory dodge bore) and a nice small stroke so i can rev the hell out of the motor.
4.342 bore x 3.375 stroke
i guess if i had the motor bored .040 over it would be a 408..

Message: that all depends on the camshaft...
with the last cam i just took out of the motor, it pulled all the way to 5500 rpms. That's plenty for a street motor. it was the comp cams XE262H.. pretty mild, but i had it because my motor was really low compression. The cam i'm going to get will probably be the XE284H, it should pull up to 6500 rpms, but i'll probably keep it down lower, as the rest of my valve train will not like going 6500 rpms. There was probably only two times i pulled the motor up to 5500 rpms.. both during a dyno.
this winter i'm going to put in some KB240 pistons and raise the compression (again) from 9:1 to 10.5:1. I'll also either go for a M1 383/400 intake or a Team G. If the tax gods are good to me this year, i'll also put some 2.14/1.81 valves in the head and have the bowls cleaned up.
i'm hoping for a 400 rwhp 400 block with even more torque.

Message: damn that is cool street motor.
now since this is a big block and is in a dakota how does it handle?? with 400rwhp and even more torque that dakota frame is gonna be counting on all its cross members. hehe
the funny thing is mopar motors are really low compression for the amount of power they put out.
chevys are all pretty damn high compression like the new trucks with 11:1 compression the hemi only has 9.6:1. my buddy just got a 340 that the guy clam he was running 12.00s down the 1/4 with in a Dart. he is going to install it in his Duster. that engine has a 10.5:1 compression and has some wild heads and some descent pistons and rods. the rest looks factory. he pick up the 340 for $1200 and has to assemble it and get a set a roller rockers.

Message: when i got my big block, it was 7.6:1 compression (rated at 8.2:1). I had that xe262 cam and a crappy eddie 750 carb. It put down 225 rwhp and 335 rwtq.. really good low end torque. The dyno started at 2200 rpms and that's were the peak torque was. It could of been lower at a lower rpm.
after that, i had the heads milled so i'd have 9:1, installed 1 3/4 primary headers, 2.5" dual exhaust and a holley 750 carb. It made it's way to 302 rwhp and 398 rwtq.
my trucks crossmembers are not the same as a normal dakota, so i do not know if they'll hold up yet.
i'd throw up a pic, but mark has turned off the html thanks to a couple of non-members.

what do you get the 400 out of?
man, 7.6:1 you might as well have a hole in the pistons.
it is all about the tq and the ricers have none of it. "my lug nuts require more tq than their Honda's make"
that is a nice rc dakota it looks fairly stock which i like.

Message: it's from a 76 charger. The motor was suppose to be 8.2:1 like all dodge's mid 70's big blocks, but as dodge is different, so are all their head castings. My 88cc chamber heads actually measured 95cc.

Message: intense, I have a question...in the coming year, I will be upgrading to a Ram 3500, but I am keeping this truck for a "play thing". I am looking for originality. Do you know of any companies that are marketing cranks that will net me a slightly larger piston and stroke? Like I said, I know I could buy a 318, 360, or upgrade to a BB, but I want to try to be original, and use the trusty old 3.9.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Thanks, I knew that larry had done it, but I was hoping you knew or had done around the same thing. By-the-way, have you finished painting your baby yet? I had forgot to ask on the member boards, but how do you deal with the heaver weight up front(I saw your frame rear welding)? I met a guy at advance auto yesterday, that had drastically altered a 95 ranger to fit a 440ci into it and had had to beaf up his front end to keep it from nose diving every time he hit the brakes.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: a 400 only weighs 60 lbs more than a 360. Replace some of the iron with aluminum and that's gone... then consider that this motor has no a/c hardware on it, no power steering on it.. non of that bulk-crap.
it's light enough on the front end for now.. i probably just removed another 100 out of the cab. I'll looking at trying to get another 100 before i'm finished.
not anywhere near done painting.. lol

Message: Hey intense,
When you were all they way down at 7.6:1 did you consider adding boost? or was your goal to stay n/a? I only wonder because that would have been an excellent starting point for 20+ psi.

Message: Speaking of "pet" engines, a buddy of mine has a 360 block that sonic tested could hold a .090 over. Yes .090, huge! We were looking at the stroker 408 kits, and the small block Hemi heads.
Add a block that can be bored .090 do the math and, walla! Baby Hemi. 426cid small block.
If only the money tree seeds came up!
I would shurly have one in my '66 dart.
