Subject: 408 Build Up
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I am going to be purchasing a 360 block in a few weeks and I want to have it built into a 408 stroker... After I buy the block, what should I do to get it started? I want this block to be able to hold a blower... what is the first step I need to take in getting this block into its BEST condition?

Thanks,
-jason

1st thing you need to do is take the block to a machine shop, have it cleaned and checked for cracks, then bored out to a 408. Once that is done you can start getting parts to reassemble it.

Pick and buy your pistons before you send the block to the shop to get bored out. Most shops want the pistons to bore the cylinders to

I would get an Eagle Rotating assembly. It's a little bit more Money, but worth every penny. They use SRP pistons; Eagle crank, H-beam rods, Clevite Bearings and all. They are about 2k complete Rotating Assemblies; e-mail me for more info and a complete price. lynn@dakotatrucks.com

Then take your block to the shop and have it notched, bored, balanced, bore aligned, decked and Radiused and Walla a Nice 408 Stroker Motor.

Here is my rotating assembly and the top end of my 408ci Alchy Motor.

There is a good writeup on dodgetrucks.org in the FAQ section on building a 408 and trying to stay on budget. I think he got it done for less than $3k, but he did most of the work himself except machining the block, and had huge tuning issues. I think he eventually got it running correctly.

Hughes sells a Stroker kit, as does KRC. Includes pistons, crank, rings, connecting rods and a couple other odds and ends. I think the KRC one is better quality. You might be able to save a little by piecing it together over time and from different vendors too. Just depends on how long you want to devote to this project.

You will need to get a new PCM on your 92, and choices are limited. The 318 PCM can run a 360, but not very well. I can only imagine how bad a 408 would run with it. Technically for a 92 your only choice is a PCM from a 93 Ram, either stock or MP. The 94-95 PCM may work, I'll let you know when my build is finished. I'm only doing a 360 in my 92, all I could afford. I did pick up a 94-95 MP PCM. A quick test run had it runnning the 318 that is still in there, but it kept tripping a code for low tranny temp. I think starting in 94 the Rams had a tranny temp sensor on the 360s. My 92 Dak does not.

Hmmm, People keep saying stock bottom-ends wont hold up to a lot of horses... Mopar make any type of block that will hold like 1000HP like Dan The Fastman's 408?

that's the R3 block... and as you can read, it's only got crank journals for 318/340 cranks.

well, you can get a 4" stroker crank for the 318/340 journal.. and that R3 block has a 4.08 bore instead of the 3.91 bore of a normal 318. The 4.08 bore would be a .040 over 340 bore..

you'd get about 418 ci with the 4" crank.

Well, how much HP could that block hold with a 4" crank... should I get it or be better off with a rebuilt 360? If I had the 360 rebuilt, I'd have it done right
