Subject: Headers IP: Logged
Message: I posted this yesterday, but I can't find it now...
I am thinking about installing headers on my 2000 4.7 club cab 4x4. I want to come out of them into a "performance" cat converter and then into a single pipe cat back exhaust.
I have seen one review that says the Gibson headers didn't fit around the steering shaft.
Does anyone have any warnings/tips on how to install or which ones to buy?

Message: I put some Gibson shorties on my 2001 4.7L dak, they were a tight fit, but they got on there. tightening the bolts is the most fun I have had in a long time.
but, I have the regular cats though.
I wanted to get the custom headers, but they were a little more.
just remove the third cat, I am.
but what do I know, I am just a country boy.
I have heard that headers really don't make much of a gain on the 4.7, but I knew right away, when I was driving over a mountain, that I had a little more low end, I could pull alot easier, in higher gears.
you will have fun installing headers on the 4.7.
go with stainless, because my chrome shine is coming off, and they are starting to rust, and remember to change the gaskets every so often, they will ocasionally leak,
that is all for now.
keep on posting, have fun putting them on, I did.

Message: I posted this info before and will again till ya learn,
on a stock 4.7 the exhaust manifolds are really a cast header, at least as far as getting the most power out of a 4.7
In a test on a dyno by a major truck magazine on the 4.7 when the 4.7 was a "new engine" they did a full test on it with and without headers as D/C was claiming at the time, about how good the cast manifolds were.
The result was, headers showed a whole "less then 2 hp gain" with a "less then 1 lbft LOSS of torque" over the stock cast manifolds. That is not seat of the pants boys but hard facts. True headers look cool to the show truck crowd and will impress the uninformed, but unless the stock manifolds on my trucks cracks I'm staying stock as I think that the cost does not justify the very limited gain.
this info is for completely stock 4.7 engines, and may not apply to your specific application.

Message: That's good advice. No matter what the application, do all the other mods first, cam, tb, intake, etc., then decide if you need headers.

Message: Your dyno numbers are at peek. You'll see a noticable improvement in the lower RPM's with headers. I certainly did combined with an FIPK for towing applications. With an auto you'll downshift much less on hills too. A cat back on the other hand reduces your low end torque. Just depends on how you want your power to kick in I guess.

Hey slopehead, what about HP/TQ gains or losses down at the RPM range where most of us use our engines?
What was it in highway speed 1800-2600RPM range?

Message: the Gibson setup I have gave me more low end TQ, I could tell a difference in pulling,
of course you may loose some top end
but generally, headers are more for a Low End Application, that is what I am told at least, and I know from experience.
but once I got my 70mm TB, I probably lost a little lowend, not to mention having 3.55s, and 32 inch tires

Message: Highway speeds running in the 2000 range is where your headers will help you. Which is exactly where I wanted more torque, particularly with a load behind. I seldom see anything over 4000 Rpm's unless I'm on steep hills in lower gears anyway.

I think that I will wait on the headers and install a high flow cat and a cat-back exhaust.
If I am reading what you guys are saying correctly, I really won't get the gains where I am looking for them.

Message: I have some JBA's on my '01 4.7L. I couldn't really tell a differencin the lower rpm's,,,any change,,,but I certainly could feel it pull a bit harder in the upper rev's to the redline. Mine did take a little cleaning out of the box, alot of slag in it. Fit great the first time,,no leaks,,,,looks good,,,sounds a TAD different,,,untrained ear would not hear the difference.

Message: The factory y-pipe with its 1 1/2" diameter inlets needs to be replaced way before you consider headers, unless you are going true duals.
