Subject: igntion timing acting wierd!

I decided to bust out my timing light today at work, to see if it was still functioning before I tried to time up my 65 stang, and hooked it up to my 2001 dakota R/T, and noticed that my timing is crazzy! it doesn't sit still, it moves about 5-8 degrees instead of a steady pulse. I've moded the cranksensor to advance timing, which sits about 12-14 advance, the stock piece only gives 5 BDTC to 5 ADTC, but it moves through a range of about a total of 8 degrees at times, but its not noticable in the actual idle speed (RPM). is that wierd? could that be an indication that my plug wires/ coil are going South? I have 64K miles, and running on original wires and coil, I'm about to replace the wires, I have replaced the plugs cap and rotor a while ago, and just lost my mind about replacing the wires, completely slipped my mind, I checked the resistance, and from the shortest wire I had 5k ohms, the longest was 15k ohms.
just wondering if the plug wires and coil are my only culprits, or if I should be looking for something else too. any positve thoughts would be appreciated.

Could be just the computer doing it's adjustments. Or it could be a loose timing chain. Plugs and wires shouldn't affect it. When you replace the wires get some good high perf. wires with no more than 1000 ohms per wire. Then you can probably gap your plugs wider by .005 or .01 to get more power. Better yet add a MSD6 and coil and really wake up that spark. It made my 318 much more responsive and better on gas.

Granted it's not that old, but I'd have that harmonic damper checked out. The outer ring with the timing marks may be loose.

damn. I was hoping that noone would say what I was thinking... I hope its not the chain, I'd hate to have to buy a high lift cam and roller rockers right now! If I'm digging that far in, I'm installing those too... uhhh... hmmm. how would one check the timing belt on the magnum engine? remove valve cover and turn the crank, measure the valve lift? thats my best guess, or maybe watch the distributor rotor button?
What would be the best way to diagnose that belt? I'll check out the dampner, I'd rather it be that, and it seems that may be the issue, since my idle doesn't seem to be affected, it's just crazy looking when the timing light is flashing. it does seem to have a funny vibration, but cant tell if thats normal or not... I've done some hefty intake system mods, but haven't touched the ignition... I'm working up to getting the MSD system, just haven't had the money to put into that yet... yah know, bad ball joints just cost me too much of my time and cash!
