Subject: Compression test results???

Message:
Just for shats and grins I decided to do a compression check on all my cylinders this afternoon. I got all my numbers recorded, but for some reason can find anywhere in my manual what the compression readings should be.

6 of the 8 cylinders were between 158 and 163, while two measured a little lower at 150.

Does anyone have any insight on these numbers? Good, bad, ugly, normal, way out of whack, etc? Just looking to see if anyone knows much about these numbers, this is really the first time I've never checked the compression on any of my vehicles before.

BTW - It's a '97 318 magnum

sounds normal, what you're really looking for is one or two parrallel cylinders that are really REALLY lower than the rest, meaning the head gasket has blown, or you ahve a bent valve... unless you have a suspicion that you have bad rings... then all of em will be low. 150 sounds good to me, but I don't know the "factory" specs...

looks good man!

Most motors are suppose to be 10-15% compression within each cylinder.

what was amazing for me is my big block. It's 30 years old and pulled 118-121 psi out of each cylinder... 5 of them being 118. I was friggin estatic!!

my compression is lower than yours because my motor was 7.6:1 while yours should be around 9:1

Yep. Nearly what I measured on my 318 with 60,000 miles on it. I also did it just to see how the comp was. It ran fine.
