Subject: Flowmaster too loud. Replacement ideas?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 2002 QC SLT+ 4x4, 4.7L.

I had a flowmaster 50 series cat-back (single/dual) installed about a month ago, but I am not happy with the resonance and loud sound.

I want to replace the flowmaster with something that sounds relatively quiet, but definitely more than stock, in everyday driving, but sounds throaty OTG.

I think the location of the vent in the QC exacerbates the noise.

I've read through many posts here, and have heard good things about Magnaflow. My local muffler guy seems to think that the Magnaflow would be *louder* than the existing flowmaster because Magnas are apparently like a glasspack.

I have heard good things about spintech mufflers, and I know that GS Motorsports uses them. Can anyone suggest a replacement for the flowmaster that would provide me with the sound I want?

If spintech, which is what I am really leaning towards, does anyone know which spintech model GS Motorsports uses in their true dual system, or what would be a good choice given my sound requirements?

Sorry for the long post, but I know that this is the place to get good info so I wanted to provide as much detail as I can. Thanks in advance.

It's supposedly stock, but I found that the Maremont muffler I put on really sounds great - at 40 mph a good resonance, and roars at full throttle.

A guy at work has a magnaflow on his 5.2 and it sounds terrific. I will be getting the same setup done to my 4.7 this spring.

Yeah, Magnaflow sounds very good, make sure you get 2.5in and not 3in, you will lose tons-o-torque

Thanks, all.

But don't packed mufflers like magnaflows wear out over time, and get louder? Isn't that a 'bad thing?'

The mesh packing in Magnaflow mufflers is Stainless Steel, so it will not come apart over time. Go with Magnaflow, there mufflers are loud on the outside but just a bit louder than stock in the inside without that teeth rattling droning noise flowmaster's produce.

I have a sound clip of what a Magnaflow sounds like on the 4.7, if your interested. Check out my site.

DakDude, since you have a QC, the muffler shop should have steered you to the Flowmaster 70 series. The 50 is 16" long, the 70 is 22", and has nearly the same exit sound, but MUCH less interior/floorboard noise. I've put 200K on two Daks with the 70 series, and still love the sound; very "user friendly".

i have a 50 series delta flow and love it. if the 70 series offered the same hp gain i would go for it but i dont know the difference. i wasnt looking for loudness just hp. i havent heard a 70 yet. i like the deep rich sound of my 50. personally as long as the outside sound isnt sacrificed i would prefere less sound in the cab.
i switched from the stock muffler to the flowmaster 50 first and noticed a very slight increase in hp. 1 month later i installed a magnaflow hi flow cat and it felt like night and day. must have been 25-30 hp. next i get the jet stage 1 chip. stock v6 daks its designed for are are supposed to get 13-18 hp but i have k&n air filter and free flow exaust so should get more.

yeah right

Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow is not loud in my QC at all. Loud enough to hear the nice tone (no drone form this muffler) but not noticable if talking or on the highway.

Nice thing is it is WAY louder on the OUTSIDE of the truck. That's what I like.

If you don't like it loud in the cab, get a Delta Flow 40 series.

I've never used Flows, but I ran a glasspack on my 02 QC for a couple of months. Too much highway drone. I replaced it with a Magnaflow and am very happy with it. Just a bit louder then stock in the cab, but not bad. No highway drone, and makes me smile when I get on it with the windows down...

The Magnaflow is a good muffler. The Ram guys love them, and a good number of Dak owners as well. The sound is not as raspy as a Flowmaster either. Sounds better anyway.

Spintechs are loud. If the Flowmaster is too loud, you will not like the Spintech. They are also pretty expensive.

Aeroturbines have gotten some good reviews recently, but they are a little expensive.

Borla ProXS is probably the best bang for the buck quiet muffler. Very good hp/torque, right up there with the Magnaflow. It is a quiet muffler though.

Or u could do what i did, keep the pipes kill the muffler and put in a glasspack. Nice growl on idle and about 2000rpm, but roars at wide open throttle

Keep the flow-ad a glasspack (resonator) in front,
or 2 behind (if you have duals) Also there are some nice looking chromed resonator tips avail also. G'paks are a cheap way to kill some of that drone w/o hurtin performance.
Good luk w/yur truk

I've seen some of those magna flow or whatever cut aways and they are nothing but a glass pack material in a muffler looking can.

Basically you will get ripped if you buy one of them vs. just getting a glass pack.

i put a 40 series flow on my Durango and it sounds good. Dont even hear it while cruising and yeah it's noticable at WOT... but IMO, it should be.

But i am not running a single in dual out... just replaced my stock muffler... still have stock tailpipe.

I had a pair of 40's on my truck.. it was too loud to notice any resonance. big block, dual exhaust, no cats and turndowns after the mufflers... yeah it was pretty loud.
