Message: i swapped my tired 3.9 for a 98 mag 5.2 a few months ago in my 90 dak 4x4. required a few wiring mods to go to mag from pre mag, but it runns,
one outstanding problem i havnt worked out yet is that i used a 98 engine, then used a wiring harness from a 92 this leaves me with wiring and a pcm that utilzes an egr valve and a engine with a intake that dosent have a place for it..........
hmmmmmmmm
any ideas to fool my pcm into thinking i have a operational egr
does the pcm test the proper operation of the egr oh i should mention i am using a 95 pcm
any and all thanks

Message: I believe '95 is also an OBD1 and your engine is OBD2. IF you get a '98 MP SBEC you shoudl be able to squeeze all the factory supplied power out of that '98 318... mind you there's a lot in there and your 1990 is much lighter than a '98.
Below is a picture from teh dyno with my 318 with 130,000 miles on it.

Message: You do not want to deal with OBDII.
Next, the PCM has no sensor input to evaluate the EGR. The PCM only has an output capability to the EGR solenoid, and the output is to close the EGR during idle for warm-up, and during full throttle. The PCM energizes the solenoid, which shuts off the vacuum to the EGR, which closes it. When the PCM senses the proper temperature, or part-throttle conditions, it cuts power to the solenoid, which then allows vacuum to act on the EGR, opening it. The "Book" states that "if the EGR solenoid is unplugged, the EGR will function at all times".., which will result in slightly slower warm-up, and slightly lower full-throttle power. So, since you don't have an EGR, no biggie. At worst, you might need to plug the wiring into the EGR solenoid (you should have one, or can add one) to complete the circuit, but beyond that, the PCM is clueless.

Message: thanks gen1 i was gonna just wire in a resistor into the harness of the same impendance of the egr coil..... but im sure i remember reading somewhere that the pcm tests the proper operation periodically by briefly changing the fuel mixture.........
i think there is a code that reads ...............
ok i just went through my dealer service manual,,shoulda earlier i guesss,, it has no dtc for operation only a short or open so im just gonna throw a resistor in there...
right arm.....
thanks for the help

Message: It's telling the truth.
Failure to affect F/A.....Fuel/Air...which is what it does when it mixes exhaust into the fuel/air mix....and if it's unplugged or otherwise non-functional, it fails to do this.

Message: ok so if this code comes up i dont doubt its telling the truth
will it run in limp or not as good as it could
and how doez one fool the controller into not knowing there is no egr

Message: I'd try plugging it into an EGR solenoid, thus closing the circuit. It might still generate a failure to affect F/A code, but that'd be one less, maybe not. Gotta try something. I don't think it'd kick into "limp home" mode for that. Limp home is for a failure of a vital sensor. Then the PCM assumes a set value and it continues to run.
