I need some help. I have a V6 with 150,000 miles on it. About a month or two ago I noticed that the performance was starting to fade. It would down shift on slight inclines on a highway, wouldn't maintain a speed over 75mph, and struggled like hell to pull a light trailer with a light quad on it. Now the check engine light is on, it tops out at about 65mph on a highway, and takes close to 10 sec. to reach 35mph from 0. How many different things could this be? I'm told it could be a vaccuum leak, or the EGR valve. But I dont know.

What year ?
Cat is also possible cause ( plugged )!!
More probable than EGR !
Bad EGR would cause poor idle

Probably a stupid question to your question, but Have you checked your plugs?, If you igniton works weel and your fuel systme work well, (pump sending right pressure, filters clean, injector okay) then check your intake and exhaust. But if it's not tripping a code, my guess would be that it is not a sensor. And as far as I know if your cat was not working, your catalyst moniter would throw a code too. Could be somthing like compression, cause a normal misfire that is reocuring should throw a code.

I cut the cat off early this year. it would get real hot and glow sometimes.

My plugs are fairly new, replaced in February and less than 10,000 miles on them.

My truck is a 97, so replacing the fuel filter is a more involved job.

Where can I get access to a DRB to read the fault codes?

Go to Autozone. They will check the codes for free.

You don't need a DRB. All you need is your ignition key:

Alright. I'm not sure how to read the codes.

I did both methods of the test with the same result each time.

There are 6 consecutive chimes. The engine light doesn't blink, and the odometer doesn't show any codes. I looked for what it could mean buit can't seem to find it. Anyone know?

If your cat was glowing hot, then it was not it's fault most likely. It would be caused by unburnt fuel, or a really rich mixture from what I remember. Which means that even if your firing, your still not running at the right air/fuel mixture, wich could make your truck very sluggish. That and I thought that our truck had Catilyst monitors after that cat that would throw a code if you were to cut the cat off, or gut it? Or did you put a dummy sensor in?

I didnt put a dummy sensor in, but it didnt read out any errors for almost 6 months.

I'm going to do the plugs and wires again and if that doesnt do anything I'm taking it in.

I tried the ignition code trick on my '97 and it didn't do anything. Either it doesn't work on my model year, or nothing is wrong.
Nothingface, I believe they typically chime when moving into the start position. I just hadn't counted them before... but it is 6 times.

I was told by my uncle (Mo-tech Cert.) that it could be the timing chain. I'm convinced that it's my plugs, since I know this things burns oil. I'm guessing that atleast one of the plugs isn't getting a spark. He told me that a broken timing chain will cause it to pump more oil, causing the excess to be burned. The RPM's through acceleration kinda jumps around a bit so I think he might be right.
