If you don't trust cotton and want to get colder air here is what I did. I drive a 03, 5.9, 4x4 QC. The intake line coming out of the Air filter housing only "points" to the opening in the fender well, stopping a couple of inches short, so it has to be sucking in engine compartment air. I took off the OEM tube and replaced it with four inch air intake tubing from McMaster-Carr and plumbed it right out into the fender well. For now I've just sealed the opening with lots of layers of duck tape. Next, I removed the small rubber gasket between the headlight and grill. There is an opening above the light that goes into the fender, removing this thin strip of rubber allows air to get to it. Then I removed the assembly. There is a small opening (maybe 1/2"x1/2") behind the lower left of the light that goes into the fender also. I made that much bigger (like 3"x3"). You can remove or cut some of the big rubber flap like many people do to get air into the engine compartment and remove some of the cowling gasket which will allow heat to escape at idle, however, the more of that you remove the more hot air your air conditioner may suck in. I still might pay big bucks for a hood but this will do for now!

To much info out there (mostly dealing with oil analysis) for me to ever use cotton, it just doesn't filter very good. Also, isn't you filter exposed to the hot engine compartment air anyway?

samtheman paid about 10 bucks and islander paid over 150, the 150 job still sucks hot radiator air and the 10 buck job doesn't it don't look pretty but works a lot better.

the kn gen2 has a heat sheild and a less restrictive air tube/filter, and is dyno/track proven.
there are r/t's in the low 13's n/a with it.

samtheman-
Did you enlarge the hole in the airbox to take advantage of the 4" tubing? I tried a cone filter with a heat sheild and got nice gains (especially mpg) but went back to the stock filter for better filtration. I found that just enlarging the intake hole to 4", even without an intake tube, got the same results (+2mpg and a bit more power).
The big problem with the stock setup isn't the paper filter, it's the airbox. (BTW, I use a cold air tube in the summer, but remove it in the winter for better mpg)

99, I was able to fit the four into the box by making it a little oval in shape. The stock tube is so strange! At the 90 turn it has to make to head into the box it gets real narrow, hard to believe enough air was even getting into the box. I agree about the box (and filter). I don't trust cotton so I've been trying to figure out how to use the cone shaped filter that is used in F150s. You can buy it in paper everywhere and I'm sure it has more surface area than the dodge filter!
