go with the rancho

if you do a search for truckin suspension you should find knobby's post about all the problmes he had. it took him like 5 weeks to get his truck done and that was only after custom fabrication picked up where truckin left off.

OMG!! Don't even think about the 4.5" Truckin lift.. It took me 2 months to get that thing on.. Nothing fit and it all had to be re-done and new parts fabbed.

Stick w/ the Rancho lift. 3" will get you up high enough for 33x12.5's

.. I'm holding back on this post .. But trust me that lift was a piece.. It's not worth it.

I agree with Knobbyman, don't get the Truckin...

If the idea of 4.5" compared to 3" bugs you from the truckin to rancho...i got a little secret for you...the rancho lift actually lifts to about 4", but rancho had to claim that it could only go to 3" so that their lifts could get covered by normal insurance agencies.

The difference in height between the Rancho and Truckin would be un-noticable, and it takes about 6 to 7 inches of lift to get to 35's, so steppin from 3 to 4.5 wouldn't allow you to run a bigger tire anyways, only give you a little more clearance.

Joey ;-) year was never stated.. I'd have to guess he has a pre-00 Dakota.

No Rancho doesn't have a lift out for the 2000+ Dakotas. I had another problem with my lift and it's back in the shop..

Anyway. Stick w/ Rancho if it's pre 2000 or post 2000 get the Performance Accessories Body Lift.

2000+ Dak Lift Options:

A) Spend two months installing a lift that still needs more work and $$ than you probably have saved(sorry Knobby, no offense:)

B) Save your Money for the event that someone makes a quality lift.

C) Save more $$ and pay the local 4x4 shop to make a custom lift.

D) Buy a 3" body lift and look almost as good as Hawk or BJ's truck for 1/3 the money.

E) Sit on your hands and wait for someone to make a choice for you!

Good-luck!

heh.. none taken.. Seriously .. I don't think people understand. A Suspension lift on this truck is POINTLESS!! You can argue that it gives more ground clearance.. But don't forget I still have my torsion bars hanging way down. And I have a plate under my Front Diff and Brackets on either side of it. My Approach & Departure angles? Sure they're about 1" taller then Hawkeyes or Bj's or any of the guys with the body lifts. But if you look at there trucks the Frame isn't the lowest part infront or rear. It's still the bumpers.

Well what about articulation? IT'S IFS!! You don't get anymore articulation out of the front. Maybe alittle from the rear but not if you re-connect the anti-sway bars.

My point is.. there is NO reason to get the suspension lift... I was stupid .. I'm admiting that to save all of YOU alot of $$$... Now if you'd rather get a suspension lift.. Buy a truck just like mine but with the overhead convienance group and the trailer tow group. And I'll trade you. I'll even toss in the nerf bars. (I'm keeping my box & roof rack though so there :-p)

Any takers? Truck will be good as new once I get this drive shaft thing taken care of.

I don't think a suspension or body lift is completley pointless. You just have to realize that neither a suspension lift nor a body lift will really increase ground clearance.

What they do is provide room for you to stuff larger tires under your ride...and that is what actually gets you ground clearance. The downside is that even significant changes in tire size don't buy you a LOT of ground clearance, as only half the increase in tire height goes to ground clearance. For example, my swap from 235/75R15's to 31x10.50's (which is 2.1" taller) only bought me about 1" of ground clearance...I'd have to go up to 33's in order to get another inch.

The only other way to "buy" ground clearance is to go a little crazy & get axles that are designed to increase ground clearance (ex. Xtreme axles, Unimog 404's, reverse pinion axles, etc.). But that is assuming that diffs are your vehicles' low-point.

Right.. But what I'm saying is.. Most of these people are wanting the suspension lifts because they give you more ground clearance.. When in actuality they only give you a higher break over angle. But because our trucks use Torsion bars.. That's not true My break over angle is the same as a body lifted truck running 33's.

At this time with out getting crazy with the front suspension (fancy shock hoop and upper control arm) there is no reason to get a suspension lift over a body lift. You get no extra travel and no extra groundclearance or angles.

Save your selves alot of $$$ and get the body lift.

the reason i don't want a body lift is because i had one on my 2000 ford ranger, 3 inches, i went to the ranch a lot, lots of bumps and dips and stuff and the spacers up front didn't last too long, the front right one started to literally smash down adn the front left had been chipped away off the top of it a lil bit
i just thnk susp lifts are a lot better lifts than body lifts

im with joey on the suspension lift. i had a 3in body lift with 33's on a toyota tacoma which gave it real good ground clearance but body lifts are not made for off road purposes and i got rid of my tacoma for a 2000 dakota 4x4 and i want to go with a suspension lift on my dakota. and after lookin at the options for a quality suspension lift im startin to miss my tacoma
