Subject: Toyotas to the rescue

Message:
I went shooting today with a friend in his 2000 Nissan Frontier Dessert Runner(2WD). We used our ammo fast and decided to do some exploring. We went down a steep, steep bank down into a little gully to see what we could find. A half hour later, we tried to leave but when we went up the very steep bank, we got a little less than half up before we started spinning our tires. We tried and tried, but all we got was spinning tires and backsliding, even when messing with the brake. An our later, a couple guys in there Toyotas came buy and offered to help. We tied ip to one but all he did was spin his tires. Due to the steep angle it wasnt gonna be easy. Finaly the other guy hooked up and it was on. Both started out straight and my friend in first. I watched as the TWO toyotas slowly pulled the Nissan up the bank. I was just glad it wasnt my Dakota that had to be pulled ot by TWO Toyotas. Man, can you imagine the embarassmen??

Hahaha dont even come to this forme and talk about the imports that tried. Look under your friends frontier and look at the rear end. Its wimpy and probably weighs 2 pounds. Look at a dakota and you could probably swap it with a transport. The dakota has more weight over the rear tires. On top of that pickups are not that great for off roading or climing in 2wd because of that weight factor. But you put it into 4wd and all of a sudden your a frieght train that owns the road. Andrew you may here many people on this form that say that 2wd is just as capable as 4wd. Givin that the truck is stock and tires are not super aggressive you will destroy them when you get on a angle or in mud or snow. They wont be able to keep up with you. I live in canada and when it snows and there is foot of snow on the road. Everyone goes 2 mph but im just swerving in and out passing everyone like the road is dry. Plus goodyear at-s the best tire made.

Actually, my truck is a 93 4x4 Dakota w/318, and 3.55's. the reason we were in his 2wd Nissan is because he had just bought the truck last year and this was the first opportunity to take it offroad. As far as talking about imports on this forum, I think anytime one of them fails on or offroad compared to one of our dodges, its great!

Imports suck balls for climbing, too light. Toyotas are alright in sand but Nissans just make me sick. My friend has one, you can push open the door with a straw, feels like you're in an aluminum can. All the american trucks have mass, our Dakotas weigh around a ton more than the new Yotas. Ford, Chevy and Dodge kick ass, especially Dodge. Keep kicking ass America

I finally found out what you guys are talking about when you say Dakotas ARE decent offroaders. Went back to the hill we had trouble on with the Nissan, this time in my Dak. Ley me tell you, even with tires that are out of place offroad, I mean theyre ready to be replaced due to lack of tread, all I had to do was put it in 4lo and the auto tranny in 1st and I went up the hill no prob! There is one part of it the is Near verticle but the 93 long bed 4x4 w/318 came through like a champ.

Sorry Collin,

Gotta disagree with your statement about climbing. I own a new 4X4 Dakota; and I will be THRILLED if it holds it own against my '89 V-6 Toyota 4X4 (which I bought new in 89). I've used my TOY to offroad all over the Sierra-Nevada mountains of California/Oregon/Nevada. What a workhorse!!!

I know this is a Dodge Dakota page. But come on. The truck is only as good as the Driver. I have several buddies that have rangers and Toyotas. We all have our days. They all wheel. They are all stock. We all have fun.

I love my new Dakota 2001 Quad Cab. It is my first new vechile. It is well designed an gives an excellent ride. The engine is smooth and powerful. I drive it every chance I get. With all this said my old 1986 Toyota 4Runner spanks it off roading. I have pulled out HmVee's, Duce and a halfs, surburbans, broncos II, alot of 4.0 4x4 Rangers.I have never had to pull a dodge out but I seldom came across one while out 4 wheeling. The driver is definately the most imoportant part of the off raod equation but it helps if the vechiles basic design is decent at off roading. P.S. My old 4Runner has a 4 cylinder....

Sandman, are you sure it was a duce & a half you pulled out. I used to drive those as well as hummers in the Army. There are few pickups that could pull a duce very easily on pavement with it in neutral much less one that was stuck. That thing weighs over 2 & 1/2 tons. Hence its name.

Hawkeye,

I can't speak for Sandman, but in 1996 I towed a duce & a half (loaded with construction equipment) up a muddy mountain path for more than a mile in my 89 Toyota (6 cyl). This was accomplished by backing up the mountain in reverse/4X4 low - and remains the most impressive feat I've ever seen my Toy perform. When I was done, there were maybe 20 guys at the top of the mountain who had a newfound respect for Toyotas. I know I certainly was impressed and amazed. Somewhere, someone has the video tape of that event.

That is something I would really like to see. Not saying it can't be done, Its just that the laws of physics are against it. Daks, Toys, etc don't have enough weight to keep traction vs the weight of a duce. I would be spinning my tires before I moved it very much. We had a stuck duce in some sand one time and a hummer coudn't get it out. Took the winches from 2 other duce's to pull it. I'm not nocking Toys or any other truck, its just the whole weight thing that bothers me.

Just to clarify my earlier post about the weight of a duce. It is rated to carry 2.5 tons it actually weighs a lot more. More like 12000 pounds or so.

A Duce and a half is a flatbed military utility truck that has a diesal engine, 3 axles, and is a 6x6. It is rated to carry 2 and a half tons of weight. That is where it gets its name. It weighs around 12000 pounds or so itself unloaded.

Agree. Traction was the biggest challenge. Initially, I only expected to pull the duece about a 100 yards to where the trail improved. However, it became readily apparent they were going to continue have difficulty; so I agreed to continue to the top of the mountain. Keep in mind, there were times when they continued on their own power. At those points my only job was to keep the chain slack between us to a minimum. However, whenever they began to bog down; I immediately began to pull; in order not to lose our momentum. It was quite a scene. We repeatedly had to unhook and reposition my Toyota in order to continue up the mountain (near Baker City, Oregon). At times the 'duece' would bog to a stop; and my Toyota simply spun/pivoted at the end of the 'pendulum'. Honestly, it was fun AND a challenge. Like I said before; we were ALL amazed; it was pretty cool... Later, I considered whether I might have damaged/overstressed my Toyota in any way. However, it never seemed to suffer from that experience.

Ok, I didn't realize it was under its own power. I was having trouble even understanding how your tow hooks were handling the weight. But if he was under his own power too then that makes a whole world of difference. Its not like you were pulling one out that was stuck stuck (sank). He just couldn't maintain traction either right?

How sad is it to use a discussion group to rattle on about how much better your vehicle is than someone elses? I have a 4x4 Nissan Crew Cab Super Charged and I've helped tow engine blocks on a trailer and helped out Ford 250's stuck in the mud. It's the driver that makes the truck, not the other way around. I wonder how many of you used to say "My Daddy can beat up your Daddy" in grade school.

I think you missed the entire point of the duscussion in this thread. It was strickly about the laws of physics. Yes the driver is a huge part of the equation, but the driver cant make the truck do things that are physically impossible.

Hey all the American trucks are great and I would take one anyday but I have a 94 Toyota 4 by 4, with a V6, 5 speed, four inch lift, 35 inch baja claws, and welded rims. That truck has gottin me where ever I have wanted to go and over what ever I wanted to get over. It has not failed me yet and I will keep taking it to the extreme.
