 Subject: winches

i would like to mount a winch onto my 98 dakota, but i can't find any mounting systems. the only bumpers i have seen are custom. i would prefer a complete new bumper. please give me suggestions to solve this problem. thanks.

There are several options out there.
You can go with front & rear reciever hitches, and then pick up a winch in a multi-mount kit. That gives you the option of pulling from either end of the rig. Rear recievers can be found just about any place, and here's a link to some front-end recievers:

You can also go the brushguard route. I would suggest Warn--who better to design a tried & true winch-capable brushguard?!? Take a look at my web site if you want to see what Warn's Trans4mer system looks like:

Last, but not least, you can go the bumper route. Hanson Enterprises, Road Armor, and a couple others offer some kick @$$ bumpers.

The cheapest route is receivers. The most expensive is the custom bumpers. Just depends on the look you want & the money you are willing to spend.

I checked out your brush guard. It looks nice. Have you used your warn yet? I had the same winch on my old chevy mudder. I used it a couple of times and didn't have very good luck with it. After the 3rd or 4th pull my motor took a crap. it cost me $250 to replace. I think this time I will go with a Mile Marker. My brother has one on his disco and it's really a well built winch. Thanks for the info on the bumpers. I still think I will go the custom route. I know it will cost me around $800-$900 but it will be worth it. I found a guy out by me that has fabricated winch bumpers for all sorts of trucks and his work looks pretty nice.

I have used the winch a couple of times. I am currently 1:5 in my pulling....5 other vehicles, once for me. Here's a piece of another post I did earlier:
"I know all too well about pulling "other" vehicles. Last year, I racked up a 5:1 ratio for my winch (5 of them, once for myself). The best one was a 4x2 F150 sitting on a set of 35" tires. He was stuck on a narrow portion of the trail at the bottom of a water & mud-filled ravine. After winching him up & outta the hole, I proceeeded to scoot over to the side of the trail to let him get passed me. And then, after helping me get my winch cable rolled back in, he had the displeasure of watching me drive through the same mud-hole that had stranded him. bwahahhaha 8^) "
As for pulling stuff, the worst was a buddies '96 Bronco (full size). He buried it to the frame in this thick, bentonite mud patch, and of course, I couldn't get lined up straight with him. At any rate, my first attempt to free him only succeeded in pulling my own PARKED 5000lb.+ Quad Cab towards him!! Granted that is only about 2/3 of the weight my Warn is rated for, but that's still a lot of pull. In the end, I had to chain my ass-end to a tree, and pull him out that way...after I drug his front end around that is!!
I'd almost question whether the windings in your motor got screwed up during construction....maybe one of the seals failed & it took on water. Hard to say, I guess. Bottom line is that I have no complaints about the Warn yet, and given Warn's popularity for some of the more "extreme" crowd (Rubicon runners and the like), I'd have to say they have something going for them. ...just my two cents...
