Most Toyota owners bought their trucks not necessarily for the off road ability, which is excellent, but their reliablity. The Dakotas, IMO, are the best looking of all trucks, and if they made them close to the quality of the Toyota, Id be an owner today. The Dak Quad cab is a neat truck. But there is no question that the Dakota is, comapred to the Tacoma, inferior in quality. Here is just one link:
http://www.consumerreports.org/main/detailv2.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=113417&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=113261

Or search on "Used cars: Best and worst" on Google.

This point has nothing to do with slamming anything, or praising anything. It merely poinst out the facts, and why the Tacoma owner's "facts" really are facts.

I forgot to mention that there are many things the Dak does far better then the Toy, and vice versa. For some, the balance of what they look for in a truck will steer them towards the Dak, while for others, theyt will get the Toy. Ultimately, they are 2 very different trucks in terms of size and quality and, say, pulling power (of course the dak wins, and wins for roominess too). BGut not everyone needs to pull a lot of weight, and for many, the beneift of a smaller truck and wheelbase offset the lack of room that the Dak owners enjoy.

One thing that is weird (on both sides of the Toy/Dak war) is when someone just says that the other truck is a POS. Childish. If I could afford it, id own both a Dak Qcab ANd a Toyota, and use each for their what they were built for.

Consumer Reports has always been highly biased toward the Jap products especially cars and trucks. Demand is what keeps the price up there on the Toyotas just like Harleys and Jeeps. The Tacoma and the Dak are about the same in cost in my area. I gave both a fair shake when I bought my Dak. Anyone who says the Tacoma has more for the money is about as retarded as the people at Consumer Reports. It may be good off-road, like a Jeep, but it's way over-priced for what you get. Rougher ride, shallower bed, hard seats, smaller inside, cheaqper looking interior etc. This is my opinion. I want the most for my money. I was in an extremely nasty wreck in my old Dak and walked away with only a few bruises. Not much left of the truck. I'm in the fire service and have cut people out of 4wd Tacomas twice this year. One guy we flew out and he didn't make it. I've seen a lot of Daks in wrecks, some serious, with very few serious injuries as a result. Just remember your Google and Consumer Reports "facts" are not really facts, they like mine are just someone elses opinion. You can drive what you want, I'll stick with my Dak.

all i have to say after reading a lot of these posts is that these people talking down on the yotas really have no idea what thewy talking about one of the posts is talking about having a procomp 3" lift. hahahaha anyone in their right mind would not do this corparate lift junk because it is mass produced and run into problems all the time. i live 3 hours from moab and spend a lot of time there. if anyone knows of dump bump on hells revenge then they know that if you have a v6 yota you are walking right up it funny thing is is that if you are driving a dak or a peej then you will be doing lovely wheel stands all day cause WHEEL BASE is an issue my yota has logged 220,000 miles i'd love to see the domestic engines dop that without fixing or replacing parts.

89 yota 4x4 w/ AOR orbit eye front and rear springs 6" lift all pro solid axle swap kit, 35x12.5 goodyear mtr's all on 5.29's locked front and rear gotta love it mMmMmMmMmMmMmMm

oh yeah never been stuck but do remembering helping them peej's with no wheelbase
want more yota info e-mail me i'll do my best to help you decide the right choice, the yota choice

Unbelieveable! The Taco guys can't spend enough time on their OWN board? Who are they trying to convince with this drivel? Enough already about foreign vs domestic and who has the better rig! I am so sick of this crap. These guys miss the point completely.

Then there's always the ones who have modified their rigs and get off on letting you know that theirs is better in the mud, or on a hill, in a straght line, or around a corner. Modify your stuff to suit your tastes and shut the hell up! If you are so insecure that you need other peoples opinions to validate your own, then find friends with similar tastes and trucks. Then you can sit around in a mutual admiration society and tell each other how smart you are.

Over the years I've driven almost everything out there. I have managed to break every one of them (even yotas) because I DRIVE THEM HARD! Straight from the showroom they all come pretty highly accomplished unless you get a lemon. They all have their strengths and flaws. My neighbor has a TuRD that is several yrs. old and he just goes on and on about how reliable it is. I just laugh! This guy never goes off road, never goes over 65, never breaks hard, goes around corners like a grandparent, etc. Hell, he never even turns the stereo up loud. I guess to him even Toyota speakers must be superior to everything I've ever driven. He babies this thing to the point that the tires DRY ROTTED before they wore out. Heck, I suppose I could probably get about a million miles out of a KIA if I drove the way he did! It is all in your perspective and how the vehicle is used.

My point is, we should all just get happy with what we paid for (which was too damn much to begin with)and move on. We are not actually going to be able to buy what we want, just what they want us to have. As consumers (actually WE are the ones being consumed) the automotive corporations do not give a crap about us. Look at the way they are financially structured and intermingled. When I grew up, we all bought domestic because it was patriotic to buy American and the imports were a joke. Now the imports are being built by our friends and neighbors and the domestics are being built in Mexico or some place I can't even pronounce. It is the automakers who abondoned us, not vice versa. Ford & GM are in bed with Japan and Europe. Chrysler has become the poor stepchild of the Kaiser. I guess we could all get a Saturn. As automotive enthusiasts stop kidding yourselves! None of the automakers give a damn about you or your customer loyalty. If they did they would have overhauled the car dealerships and they way you buy the things years ago. Is there any other product in America where you have to haggle over the price like you are in an Arabian Flea Market just to buy it? "We are sorry, but your trade in (which was the finest vehicle on the planet a few years ago!) will need to be hauled off for scrap" "However, the NEW MODEL will hold IT'S value forever!" We'll just take what you STILL owe on the last one and roll it into the next note and you'll only be making payments for 72 months!" "Oh, we forgot to mention that there are already 17 factory repair bulletins and that our Five Star service department opens at 10:00 and closes at 4:00 and operates by appointment only because they are so busy."

Do you remember a few years ago when Ford had an ad campaign in all the magazines and on TV showing the "engineers" who designed the Mustang? There was not a performance oriented person in the bunch. One engineer was talking about cupholders. Another spoke fabric textures. The yuppies were talking "ergonomics" and sound/noise control. They all looked like they had grown up watching Transformers & Power Rangers. None of them looked as if they had ANY connection to the real world. The only sound control I want to know about is why they can't get rid of the wind noise around a door? It's 2003 and we are not driving Pintos or Vegas. They STILL haven't gotten the cup holders right. How hard is it to send an intern to Mcdonalds and 7-11 to gather up the cup sizes used on planet Earth? Give me a fabric that actually REPELS liquids and stains. Hell, just cover MY whole interior with that stuff Dockers are made out of. Now, that took about 10 minutes. Let's talk engines and drive trains. The auto maker's only concern is profit not pleasing the customer. If you don't belive it, just read the posts on all the different boards. I am partial to GM but it really hacks me off that their answer to the midsize Dakota is to design a truck (Colorado) with an inline 4 and an inline 5 to compete with a V-6 & two V-8 options. I spoke to a zone rep and he was trying to tell me the horsepower, mileage, and torque specs were very comparable to the competition and this was a practical truck. I told him that while the left side of the brain understands that crap, the right side coulda had a V-8. Makes me wonder if they hired the Ford engineers. Chevy wants to sell an old man's concept to a young crowd. The old guys are driving the full size trucks with V-8's and have better gas mileage because they do not have to flog their rides to get up to speed.

Well, I guess it is time to wrap this up. My personal advice, after many years of driving is to buy what you can readily find parts for and work on yourself. After you have made a deal on a rig don't beat yourself up too much, because SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE, got a better deal. I agree with init6 who states that we should co-operate to keep the trails open. The wilderness is rapidly closing to those who wish to enjoy it. Thanks for letting me ramble. By the way, I just stopped in from the ZR2 board to see how the other side was living these days. I like to keep an open mind.

You might say your tacoma has some advantage's over the Dakota. And it does.

But the Dakota has some advantages over the Toyota to. Does yours come with a V8? I think not.

What about decent size room for the back seat? Haul rattings? Not to mention tow ratings?

Sure the Tocoma does have a smooth V6 and does have a better resale value. But it depends what you like.

I've got a 98 Durango, and it has the most impressive cup holders of any car I've ever seen. In the front console, two small ones and one large one. The large one is the EXACT size of those large plastic coffee mugs with a handle.... and there is a cut out section for the handle that holds the damn thing perfectly in place. Not sure if this was intended in the design, but from the functionality of it, it has to be. Behind the drivers seats, six cupholders. That's good design. Thanks Dodge, I like you, I respect you, I buy you, keep producing excelent quality cup holders. ROCK ON!

I find several things very ironic about this thread:

1) The original post was made by a Dak owner, who considered that the Tacos were better offroad, but most of the other Dak owners are so blinded by their brand loyalty that they cannot acknowledge that there is anything desireable about a Toyota whatsoever. The same is true for the Taco owners who say that a Dak is a POS [even though they wish they had the option of a V-8].

2) There are a few comments about ricer this, ricer that; Tacomas are now, and always have been built in the US.

3) A couple people have commented,"Toyota guys, go back to your own board." I spend a fair amount of time on one of the Taco boards, and even though everybody knows that I drive something else, I have never been asked to leave there. It is nice to hear the good and bad things that owners say about different types of vehicles.

When I bought my last truck, I took a good hard look at the Dodge fullsize; the ONLY reason that I considered it was the Cummins Diesel. I ended up buying a Tundra because it will last forever, just like my other 5 Toyotas have. Just so that I am not perceived as being a blind Toyota loyalist, my offroader is a Jeep with a Chevy engine and tranny, and Toyota axles and transfer case...sort of the best of everything.

Let's try to keep an open mind, appreciate the fact that all vehicles are good at some things, and maybe not so good at others.

Not that your ridiculous post deserves a proper reply, but...

The Celica got totalled after 7 accidents; it was a magnet for idiots. Although the engine and tranny were promptly transplanted into a friend's vehicle, I doubt that it is still running since that was nearly 20 years ago. The FJ-55 Landcruiser was sold 7 years ago with 285,000 miles on it because I didn't need three trucks any longer; the guy who bought it stills drives it, God only knows how many miles on it by now. Most of the drivetrain from my '83 pickup is in my trail rig. The Taco was sold for $13,500 with 73k miles on it because I wanted something bigger and with a V-8 for towing the trail rig. The current owner still drives it daily. The Tundra has 40k on it, and it is just barely broken in. Yep, they pretty much do last forever.

I sincerely hope that you have the same level of enjoyment from your vehicle.
