I can't seem to get anyone competent enough on the S10Forum to answer my question. So I've posted this question on the good ole Dodge Site :)

My parents that live overseas have a 1993 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4 4.3L engine. They keep burning up alternators for some reason. Does anyone know if this is a common problem for this model or any suggestions? I told them to ditch the Chevy and go Dodge :) That Blazer might only have 30k miles.

My suggestion was upgrade from 105amp to 170-200amp alternator. Maybe even try a bigger battery.

Don't know why they're burning up alternators but that big a jump in output might burn up some wiring.

Are they "burning" them up electrically?

A common cause of alternator failure is a too-tight drive belt. Does it use a auto-tensioner on a serpentine belt or the old fashioned drive belt with alternator adjust for tightness?

I think it's a serpentine belt, GM converted to Serpentine in 1989. I'm assuming they are rebuilds, but not the same alternator.

I've done some more research and came to concussions that it could be a bad ground and bad battery wires. If that doesn't fix it, I would say get a new 140amp. I've heard the 105amp only produces 40amp at idle.

hey anthony, i do believe your on the right track with the ground on the battery. my 95 s-10 kept having alternators go out, and i found out later that the bolt in the negative termninal was just a little too long and it punctured through, creating a bad ground, so you might check that.
