Subject: Does my truck have a timing belt?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everyone, I have a '97 Dakota Sport 4 banger, does this truck have a timing belt- or a chain? How often do I need to replace either? And if a chain/belt breaks will the engine be damaged? Thanks!

The 2.5 L 4 banger uses a timing belt. It is recommended to change it out at around 60K. Don't know what the valve clearance is so I don't know whether it'll take anything with it if it breaks.

Replaced several of these on K cars with 2.2, 2.5 and 2.5 turbos. Judging by the wear on the belt I would stick close to the 60K and not find out what happens when it breaks. Could be expensive lesson

I've always added STP fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank with each oil change, now i've heard it doesn't really do much good. Any opinions?

I had it done at 170,000 miles on my 91 2.5L and it cost $250 (including changing out the front seal). Not bad IMHO. Also, if the belt goes it will not do damage. The engine just stops (in 1991 at least).

Time for a new manual. The V-6 is chain driven.

I have a 93 with a 2.5. I was attempting to change the water pump before realizing what a pain in the a$$ is was. Before realizing this, I was attempting to remove the platic cover on the front of the block, and removed the bolt to which I now believe is the tensioner for the timing belt. Now when the truck is running, the belt is loose and is slapping the side of the plastic cover. Does anyone know how I can get this tightened back up and running right again?

Thanks
