Subject: Better Burnouts from 4.7 or 5.9?

Which engine/tranny combo would do better burnouts... a 4.7 with the HD manual or a 5.9 with an Auto? Also, I'd like to hear techniques used with the manual for doing a really smokey burnout.

I always wanted to drive a car off the dealer lot that had the ability to lay some serious rubber.

5.9 more torque and first gear speed. Not as fun to dive IMO as the 5 speed 4.7, more money as well.

2001 RC 4.7 5sp 9.25" 3.92 LSD
Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, HO cams installed.
Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

Burnout with a manny tranny:

Put the clutch in, tach it up. Blip it up to like 3000 a time or two, then right as you dump the clutch (the quicker the better), shove the gas pedal through the firewall.

Immediately after you have dumped the clutch, move your clutch foot over to the brake pedal and push it in until it stops your forward roll. You don't want to stall out the engine, but you do want to keep the truck in place. Now, you decide how long you want to burn it up..... Yes, you ARE doing damage to the rear brakes, but not very much damage.

When you feel cool enough and have everyone's attention, release the brake and watch the tachometer. Once the brakes are released, the engine (especially the 4.7) will want to surge to redline quickly. Then stay in it until the tires bite and then rip 2nd gear. It may keep spinning depending on your rear gear ratio.

That's how it's done. I would practice in a parking lot before you do it on the street. The left-footed braking takes some finesse. Good Luck.

I always do my burnouts in 2nd. You just have to make sure the revs are up a bit when you start. 2nd gear makes way more smoke! hehehe

I've done 3rd gear burnouts with the street tires on at the track but it's not advisable..... too easy to stall the engine initially.

An R/T does great burnouts. Put it in 2nd so it will shift automatically from 1st to 2nd in the burnout and let'r rip!

3rd gear burnouts? Hope there was some water on the treads..... Yikes. I've heard that will shatter the rings in the tranny.

Sounds like the 4.7 will do the job easy enough. How about the 4.7 with the Auto? I noticed that the 4.7 has the option of the 42RE. I think that (or the A500) is the same as in my 95 behind the v-6. My tranny is starting to go, albeit slowly, after 99k miles. How could they put the 4.7 in front of the 42RE with that much of a power increase and not have reliability issues?

Anyone have any mpegs of a 4.7L Dakota pulverizing some tires?

The auto behind the 4.7 is not the 42RE or the 46RE that is behind the other Dakota motors but an automatic that has only been used with the 4.7 in Dakotas, Durangos, Jeep Grand Cherokees, and now the 2002 Ram. If you are talking about laying rubber without using the brakes the manual will do it better, if you are talking about a stationary burnout using brake and gas at the same time the automatic is smoother and easier. Anything will do burnouts if you know how (except some AWD's are about impossible without chaining them down) my old caravan would smokem with the best of them, but there's something wrong with just 1 front tire going up in smoke! The test of a powerful automatic for me has always been the ability to spin both rear tires just by letting off the gas and stabbing the throttle. The R/T gets pretty good rubber doing this with no braking. The manual 5.2 or 4.7 will spin much longer with a high RPM clutch drop, but even our old Omni would do that with it's manual. The most powerful manuals should be able to spin tires through at least 4 gears. My old 300 HP chevelle with muncie 4-speed still stock could spin good through the first 3 gears and still leave a 5 foot strip in 4th (no braking used). The muncie could be shifted without ever lifting off the gas, and just the most instantanious clutch action. I've heard the Dakotas truck transmission is not really good for "power shifting". My 5-speed neon, and it's cable shifter, would 'power shift' sometimes, but it didn't always mesh just right so I stopped trying. Nothing I have tried is like those old school, mechanical linkage, bullit proof, 4 speeds from the late 60's musclecars. The downside of those old 4 speeds is the lack of an overdrive which in a 3.92 rear geared Dakota would make a 80 MPH highway cruise pretty uncomfortable.

That auto is the 45RFE, and is supposed to be stronger, using planetary gears instead of bands. Hersbird - I had one of those Chevelles too, good for 4 gears of rubber - not sure how I kept my liscence !

to fith gear although I have never installed a
line lock on a car with abs,anyone know if
there is any probs with line lock on abs?

The line lock goes to the front brakes so unless the Dakota had the optional 4 wheel ABS its not even an issue. Otherwise I don't know, but how a line lock works is that it traps the brake fluid in the line to the front brakes while all the brakes are applied. Then when you let off the brakes the rears are free and the fronts are locked up. The release of pressure is also quicker this way, which is good for quick consistant launching at the track.
The 45RFE is supposed to be stronger then the 42RE but not the 46RE. That second number relates to the strength of the transmission, the strongest Dodge automatic is the 47RE, used with the cummings and the v-10 Rams.
