 Subject: 1999 Dakota Won't Start

Hello, I have a 1999 Dakota that will not start. I have spent all day on this and have not realy made any progress. It was running but it had a water leak and to get it home the driver stopped every so often and added water to the overflow. The last time they stopped it was getting hot (still not in the red zone on the guage they said) so they turned the engine off and refilled the overflow. They also thought they could cool off the engine by pouring some water over the engine. Now we are here... It won't start. The check engine light is not on but I don't have a way to check for any stored codes at this time. Here is what I have done.
*It was slow to crank so I charged the battery and tested it, it tested bad so I replaced the battery.
*Checked fuel system, good fuel and fuel system pressure (48 PSI).
*Checked coil, primary resistance at coil harnes was 1.6 ohms. The haynes manual says .92 to 1.2 ohms. Secondary resistance was 12.9K ohms and manual says 11.3K to 15.3K ohms. Secondary was good, primary was just outside the range, should this still be replaced?
*Checked spark at two of the cylenders, good spark.
*Replaced spark plugs. (they were old and needed to be replaced anyway.)
*Checked voltage at MAP sensor, good.
*Checked voltage at TPS sensor, good.
*Tested Auto Shut Down relay, functions as normal.
*Tested fuses in under hood fuse box. All good.
I don't know what else to check. Any suggestions here? Thank you in advance.

No code reader needed,
Either key on key off 3 times or trip meter button.
The motor is turning over or not?
With it low on water/coolant the gauge would not
have read temp accurately.

Pssst, you're wrong. For some unknown reason '99 is I think the only year that the key trick does not work on.

Yes, the motor turns over and sounds almost like it is going to start.
It sounds like the key procedure will not work on this model year but what does "trip meter button" mean. Is this the trip odometer reset button? What do I do with that?

Okay, I found out that if I hold down the odometer button while turning the ignition on it does a check. The check seems to complete but does not display anything other than the mileage.
What does this test do?

When was the last time you replaced the spark plug wires? And ignition rotor and cap? If it's been more than 50K miles, do that.

in?" Paraphrased from the IT Crowd.
My 5.7L was running fine & usually starts in about
2 cylinders. I.e. it fires in < 1 rev. It
cranked had > 40 psi fuel & spark but wouldn't
fire. Disconnected battery for 2 days.
Reconnected. Fired immediately. Probably only
need to disconnect for < 10 minutes.
Worth the try.
