I have a 97 V8 Dakota SLT 4X4. I jammed on my breaks to avoid someone cutting me off. The next time I attempted to use the breaks the pedal went to the floor, I pulled over and looked underneath. I appeared to be leaking in 2 places from the steal brake line. Is it possible to blow out the line like that, just from hitting the breaks? How expensive will this be to fix?

Okay, so I inadvertantly used the wrong spelling, my apolagies, how about answering the question instead of being an a##hole.

When the brake lines get old and rusty, they can fail like that. Price will depend on how much of the brake lines you replace; can't really give you an estimate for someone else's work.

Last fall this happened in the driveway - one front and one rear rigid line blew, leaving me with no hydraulic brakes. I cut out the entire system and installed all new rigid and flex lines, new calipers, pads and rotors. Had to replace the rear ABS valve, as the fittings were hopelessly bunged. Doing it myself cost about $600, and $300 of that was the ABS valve. A pro would have charged at least double that. The line itself is cheap, less than $1 a foot. Use PolyArmour brake line, it's coated with polyvinyle fluoride to prevent rust. Sold in fixed lengths of 12, 24, 30, 51, 60 and 72 inch lengths at Advance Auto and other places, or coils of 25 feet and terminate it yourself. You will save a lot of money doing it yourself.
