I got a 1998 dakota sport with the 3.9L V6. I have noticed that the temp gauge on the dash will never get to the middle. It stays at 1/4 ways up the gauge. Is this normall for dakotas. Also i have noticed that my heat is really poor. possibly heater core??

More than likely a failing (or failed) thermostat. When they fail in the open postion, they don't slow the water flow down. This does not allow the engine to heat to its full opperating temperature. An easy check is to stick a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator...say cover half. This restriction of airflow should force the temp to rise. I have used this method before when mine failed while out of town. I was able to drive 4 hrs back home and fix it there. The key is to closely monitor the temp when you 1st put the cardboard in. You don't want to get a piece so big it causes your rig to overheat. This is something that you would probably not notice during the warmer months. When Mine failed it was 20 degrees outside. It never got warm at all. Good luck.
