Subject: steering wheel doesn't lock
IP: Logged

Message:
I was turning the steering wheel with the keys out of the ignition today (don't ask why), and realized I can turn it as much as I want without it locking. Did the 2000 4.7L CC not do this, or has something failed on mine?

My '01 RT doesn't lock the wheel about 90 - 95% of the time.

Mine doesn't lock either. '01 CC. Maybe it's normal.

Not normal. The locking steering wheel has been a federally mandated feature since the early 70's

when Chrysler switched to the new style steering columns they changed the lock plates inside also and these only lock in 1 or 2 positions only. try turming the wheel 180 degrees after shutting the car off and removing the key. just remember to turn the wheel back a little when starting it again as the key may be hard to turn with the wheels turned against the lock

my 99" Dak has never locked, nor my 2001 Durango. It's just hard to turn the wheel with the engine off and no power steering.

For some reason known only to dodge engineers, the steering wheel does not lock with the wheels straight ahead. You have to turn the steering wheel about 180 degrees to lock it.

'06 Dakota here, wheel has never locked. Don't know about the 180deg thing, I mean, who does that? When I park I straighten my wheels up, I don't crank the wheel upside down. Why would I do that? Not to mention, dodge hasn't posted anything inside the cab stating you have to do this to lock the steering so how would anyone even think to do this in the first place?
