Subject: annoying noise IP: Logged
Message: My truck is a 99 cc 3.9 manual tranny 2 wheel drive. With the
motor running i am getting this very loud and annoying squeal.
This has been an ongoing problem. About 6 months ago I had a
sqeal like this and a new serpentine belt solved the problem. Then
about 2 months ago it came back and it turned out to be a water
pump going bad. Now the noise is back. It is much louder when it
is wet out side. It gets quiter when the engine comes up to full
operating temperature. When the belt was bad if I sprayed the belt
with silicone spray the noise would go away temporarily. That is
not working this time so I don't think that it is another bad belt.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: check the tensioner and idler. and don't spray anything on your belts. if they are sqeaking, there is a reason. belt dressing and silicone just hide the problem not fix it.

Message: Ok I am not that good with the terminology on vehicles. The
tensioner I know what that is but I am not sure how to check if it is
the problem. As for the idler I don't know what that is. I only
sprayed the belt to see if that was the problem. I was not trying to
fix the problem. Thanks for the help.

Message: take the belt off and spin the tensioner and idler pulleys by hand. they should spin free and smooth. if you feel a little grinding when you spin them you can change the complete assy or some people have changed just the bearings in them.
it could also be that the tensioner spring is on the way out and not holding enough tension on the belt allowing it to slip.

Message: Well I think you hit the nail on the head daddio I took off the belt and grabbed the pulley which had like a 1/2 in of play in it. I will replace it as soon as I have a chance.
Thanks again

Message: Well I changed the belt tensioner and the noise is still there. Does any body have any other ideas. The guy at the parts store said that it might be the alternator bearing. Is it possible to replace just the pulley and bearing on the altenator or would I have to replace the whole thing? I really don't want to have to replace a $140 alternator that is stil funtioning properly just for a noise.
Thanks

Message: did you check the idler pulley? also check the alignment of all the pulleys. if they are not inline with each other it will cause the belt to squeal.$140 isn't bad for an alt. cheapest i could find one for my wife's Mazda was $200.
check the idler first.
