 Subject: Real Wheel Studs

I have a 2002 4 x4 SLT Club Cab Dakota. Today, I bought tires at SAM's Club. They had a tough time removing the lug nuts from the left rear tire. The Dodge Boys cross-threaded and over torqued the studs after doing rear brakes????? My question, what does it take to replace two studs (drum brakes on rear)? Right now, I only have four of six lug nuts in place. Guess I should be happy that I didn't have a flat and have to remove the wheel on the side of the road. The drum is held on the axle with a small clip over one of the studs - pull it off. The remnant of the studs can be pressed (best method) or punched out. Then a new one slid back in from behind. When the lugnut is tightened it will pull the stud all the way into the axle flange. You're good to go.
My tire shop did this the last time I had my Durango there for a rotation. One on each rear axle.
I don't know why thee knuckleheads at Sam's couldn't do that. Oh yeah I do, they don't have a clue.
If the last time the wheels were off was when the Dodge boys did your brakes take it back and make a stink until they fix it. Don't drive it without those two studs missing any longer than the (slow) drive it takes to get it fixed.

I really appreciate the assistance--looks like a weekend project if I can locate the studs. Do you think a NAPA or Autozone will have the parts I need??? Want to get this fixed ASAP. Thanks again, Fishful Thinking

i have also had to replace 3 studs. autozone i know has them but make sure to get the 1/2ton studs and not the 1/4 that they will try and sell you.
spray some brake cleaner on the broken studs and let set for a minute or two if their being stubborn. once your done getting them out which shouldn't take long do what Modain said "When the lug-nut is tightened it will pull the stud all the way into the axle flange." you may have to use something to make up for the space in between the lug-nut and where the stud mounts to the flange "if that makes sense?"
remember its 1/2 ton stud not 1/4 ton or just bring in what remains of you original stud to the auto parts place and match it up. the studs are only $1.50
i hope it doesn't take you a weekend.

Also, if you have to hit the stud out make sure you have a proper sized punch so you only apply the "hit" to the stud and not the axle flange. You don't want to bend the flange by hitting "it".
Just use a hand wrench, not a power tool to pull the stud through.
