400 will be taller / wider that the 440. 400 / 440 use the same heads and exhaust, bit the taller / wider block requires diff intake. Main journals are alos (slightly) larger in the 440 than the 400. I am going 383 in the convert because the smaller size eases axhaust issues and will not interfere w/ the blower or master cylinder. If you have access to a 440 and a 400, pick 'em both up! 440 crank & rods with Ross or KB stroker pistons in a 400 gives you 451 with a really light rotating assy.

As you strip things, give me a shout, as I may pick them up from you. I was given a 73 Dart Sport from a buddy in CA, still looking for stuff for it.

I was just about to call you on that one Ray! 400's are much cheaper than 440's around here, and they are killer motors with a little work. Go to BBDart or forabodiesonly and look up 383man. His son has a 72 Dart with a 400 in it MP .557 cam Eddy heads and they drive it to the track (90 miles round trip) crank off 11.50's and drive it home. Do NOT underestimate the lowly 400!
And 01Dakslt as you can see MadKaw has tried that, to no avail. The communication problem with him is why we have to track him down on these forums he visits First it was bionicdodge, then DFW Dakotas , now here . I really do not think that Greg has the funds to make this right. That is why we are being brushed off. And I am sorry , but I do not believe for a second that he did not know that the rockers were damaged. As soon as I opened the package I saw it , immediately. For crying out loud I had to beat them off the shaft with a rubber mallet. Some would barely even rock back and forth , they were real stiff. But if I got some csh towards new bearings , that would make me happy. But as usual, he will promise the world , HERE , and deliver NOTHING. Thats the way it goes, just keep watching. He will disappear.

I got screwed by a thief buying car parts over the internet and the guy made every excuse in the book but I still ended up getting f-u-c-k-e-d. There is very little you can do except smash in the guy's face next time you see him. I really feel for the Canadian guy because there is even less he can do. Anyway, if he gets his parts or money back he is luckier than I was.

I know how great the 400 is. When I was 17 my Dad bought a 1 ton '76 crew cab Dodge beast from a older guy I worked with. It was mostly stock except he swapped in a RV cam, headers, and believe it or not, the guy put a 2 barrel manifold and carb on it for reliablility!

The previous owner had a camper shell on it and towed a boat. It was supposed to have lots of miles on it when my Dad bought it in 1987.
My Dad used it for work driving into Phoenix 5 days a week, or up into the mountains for jobs up there. It got the usual Spark Plugs, water pump, altenators, and a butt load of header fried Starters twice per year :)

But never cracked into the engine for nearly 10 more years! I assume it had miles over 300K when it finally started to foul plugs fairly often. I'd clean the plugs and the damn thing would rap up like a race engine! Eventually the 727 started acting up and my Dad sold it when he started driving a Econline Van.

It never had a rod knock and when I was a teen ager I drove it several times balls to the wall! And my Dad put it to the test for years as well.

Yeah. The 400 is a bulletproof engine.

I haven't had a 440 but have worked on a few. I assumed it would be similar in reliablility???

I don't know about the Dart off of memory, but the Duster looks like a BB would be easy. It has very low SHOCK Towers since it uses Torsion bars.

Oh. And the Rack and Pinion I bought for our late Cirrus MAY be usable on this car. The Duster has the steering linkage BEHIND the K Member like FWD car... HMM. Thinks me and my welder may be able to make that work. WOuld be NICE for extra clearance!

Hey GD, if you are looking to go that route, again check out www.bigblockdart.com the fellow who owns the site makes cross members with all that fancy suspension stuff. They are sweet looking, they are called AlterKtions, it sounds right up your alley. My car is all orig, so that is not the route for me, but if I was building a pro street car or a 1/4 miler that would be going in. Have a look, real nice stuff. Dave. Got a email from intensedak39 , but really no info on it . see below . Is it so hard to click on the letter icon in these postings ??? I have mentioned that a couple of times.......

i already have your home address written down.. what i was asking for was your email address as i did not save it.

The UPS problem can be solved by providning the buyer with the tracking number. That way if it gets lost the buyer is simply obliged to wait until the shipping problem is resolved because the seller has kept his part of the bargin.

Too true! It would be good to have the tracking number to follow progress of goods or to set ones mind at ease if you are in doubt that the goods were actually shipped. Many attempts to get the tracking number went unanswered.

I use UPS software to ship. The software can supply sender and/or recipient an emailed progress of your package (sent, delivered, refused, exception, etc.) The progress reports come from UPS directly.

Greg let me know that the manifold is being bead blasted today and should be shipping tomorrow. I am looking forward to it.

Well I MAY be changing my mind about the Big Block.

I am pretty sure I want to do my first Turbo Charged car. That is certain with this Duster. Doing so on a 440, and doing it to be worth bothering, is going to be psycho in that Duster. I'd never manage that kind of power if I want to drive it around on the streets.

I think I should buy that 318 from my friend and build that up with the Turbo for now.

It would fit right in the car. More room for me to fab the exhaust and all that.

I asked him about it last night. He said he might be trading it to some guy for a 4 speed manual for his 1973 Duster with his 318. (He actually has a serisouly built 360 not assembled yet that is going in that. Something like 425 HP and 8,000 revs, heads have stainless 2.02, hemi springs, etc. Built for several hundred HP of Nitrous. This is another story.)

Anyway. I asked how much CASH the guy wanted. He said $250
So, maybe I should BUY that tranny for him. $250 aint bad. Because I'd get that 318 which is in good condition. Runs actually and never been overheated, repaired, etc.
He also mumbled that if he does the 4 speed manual I could get the 727 and 2500 stall (brand new never used stall). He may want a little more than the $250
The 727 we modded and did a shift kit to like 10 years ago. It works still. Just seems a little buggy now. He said it revs sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. So I think a rebuild is in order. But there's a tranny to withstand my boosted 318 for a bit.

Anyway. I still want EFI to go along with the Turbo. And maybe aftermarket heads. Maybe just do some head work to what's there.

So far all I've done to the Duster is clean out some junk in it, have my daughter start cleaning up imbedded Pine Needles with the shop vac :)

I've got body work to do before it's engine time.

Dave,
No tracking number, but it was to have been sent yesterday. Have you heard anything?

GD,
Head over to bigblockdart.com and look up the posts of 400Dart. He built a turbo, blowthrough, 400 for a 73 Dart Sport. I have see the vids and pics - crazy! You should be able to get a message to him via the site. Great guy and easy to talk to. He should be able to offer up some advise for you either way.

Not a word Ray, last week (12/12/05) he sent this
"i already have your home address written down.. what i was asking for was your email address as i did not save it. " which I found strange because my email is attached to every post I've made on here.
But who knows, maybe he will make things right with you first then me. Or maybe just you, and I will have to look for him again on other forums , lets hope not .... But I do have 2 weeks off at Christmas, lots of time to surf the forums 8). And I have a few friends that do some detective work also (wink).

Also forgot to add, Hey GD, if you are going to go small block in there why don't you look for a 360 ? They should not be that hard to locate. 42 more cubes, longer stroke = more power. I would think you should be able to locate one of those fairly reasonable, not much more than what you will be paying for the 318. Just my opinion, Dave.

The deal is I could get the 318, tranny, all from the same source.

If I remember, the 360 has different balancing/oil pan, etc. Had to play that game when I swapped out a 318 for a 360 in my late 1986 Ram.

The 318 I have available is in really good shape too for a approx 32 yr old engine.

More stroke, would be more power in general. But Turbocharged, I'm still not going to be hurting for power :)
I figure the 318, since it's so reliable, would be forgiving to any mistakes I make along the way :)

I haven't done anything to the car this weekend yet. Tonight I dropped the front axle in my 2003 Dakota. Was about to put the new gears in when I realized I got the WRONG inner pinion bearing.
AUURGGH!

Got to HOPE the dealer parts depo is open in the morning so I can get the correct one. They are about the only ones LOCALLY for the Dodge diff bearings and seals.

Hope to have THAT done this weekend. Would be nice to use 4WD again soon. I've been running my 4.56 in the rear, 3.55 still up front :P

It LOOKS like he is trying to straighten things out with Ray. Time will tell. If he did in fact send him the intake this time, it should be there within the next day or 2 , meaning by Tuesday of this week. We will hear about it eithor way. Then it would seem that bitching on here at least helped one of us, and it was worth it. But I have pretty much been ignored since early November. Lots of promises , but thats it.
Dave.
