Subject: Oxygen Sensor number confirmation

I just changed the oxygen sensor ('91 V6 3.9 EFI) after being long overdue for it, and the mileage dropped like a rock (now around 9-10 mpg). The part was Bosch 15707. Can anyone confirm this is the correct sensor? I noticed the holes in the sensor protector are very small, unlike the long slots that are usually associated with oxygen sensors.

Just to be on the safe side, I disconnected the electrical connector and warmed it up to check for a warning code, so I know the circuit works.

Looks like the right part to me. You can check with autozone, advance or napa. All have parts lookup on their website.

Try disconnecting the battery

This will reset the computer. Although these computers are adaptive, if they get way out of wack they have a hard time getting back to normal. I replaced a fuel pressure regulator on my Explorer and although it ran better there were still driveability problems for over 200 miles. Reset the computer and instantly it drove normal.

One interesting comment. With a bad FPR, I was running lean and had quite good fuel economy. This may have been in part because I drove it very gently to prevent pinging. With new FPR my mileage dropped. Mostly because I was driven it a little harder than before.

^^I've heard of the computer needing to adapt to new fuel injectors, so is this the same thing? Can anyone explain why this is the case? Shouldn't the computer instantly send new signals from the new information it gets?

Also, since I disconnected the O2 sensor to check the warning system, it now gives me a code 12 (standby memory lost). Would that qualify as disconnecting the battery or not?
