I did not like the prices of the tonneau covers, so I made my own out of (2) half inch sheets of plywood. I only had to drill 2 holes in the bed (front wall) to secure it. Painted it white to match the truck. I also added a Pop-Lock tailgate lock.
It takes me about 2 minutes to remove it from the truck (comes off in 2 pieces).
The rear section folds over the front section, and the whole cover can be raised for access (hinges at the front of truck bed.
If any one is interested in pictures I can try to take some (I may need help on getting them in email form.

If you routered the edges and wrapped it in vinyl, it'd probably look pretty professional. I may try building a flush-mount version & wrapping it. Thanks for the idea.

noltz,
I went to Home Depot and found white plastic 1/2 inch outside corner mouldings that fit perfectly to hide the plywood edge.

Does anyone have any ideas how to keep the wood from roting out after about 6 to 7 months of having the wood cover. Ive even tryed to put the vinyl over it and it still seemed to rot ofter a few months of being in the sun snow and rain.

if rot is such an issue, why not get some of that new marine plywood that is really epoxy encapsulated even when you cut it. I've even seen it used lately as planking for park bench seating. It's some cool stuff... dunno on price?

I thought about this a while back and figured I could put some pieces of either square stock or channel on the inside lip of the inner sides of the bed to lay the faux plywood on top of. Except for water leaking through, I thought about 3 strips so I could remove one two or three as needed. I never really got it off the ground though :-(

How about rolling on some Herculiner or have a spray on bedliner place do it. it wouldnt cost too much since they are spraying 2 pieces of plywood with no masking. have them do the whole thing ( after you do all your cutting and fittment) then you can just put it on or wait till it fades then spray it with a can of paint ( I know that paint will stick to the stuff really well once its weathered a bit

I"m in the process of building my own cover for my Chevy S-10 longbed. Going to use half inch plywood covered with material from a billboard, toughest stuff I've seen. Just cut the material about 18 inches bigger than twice the size of the body of the bed and center the plywood about 9 inches from one side and glue the material directly to the wood. Fold material to opposite side of wood, flushing all the edges of the material. Should have about an 8 inch apron around the plywood. Trim and fold down edges. I plan on using snap fasteners abot every 6 in. all around. Install hinges in front of bed. Havent figured out locking hardware yet. But man, this billboard material is tough and weatherproof. Used some on my shed roof, 5 years later it's still like new. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

i know its been some time since this was brought up, but why wouldnt you just coat it in fiberglass resin. i do that with my speaker box's when i make them out of 1/2" ply. that way you can sand them down and paint them then put them in the back of the truck. waterproof and adds strength also!

I used treated plywood for my F-150 years ago and covered it with color matched outdoor carpet.I built a frame with 1/4" angle iron and secured the plywood to the rails with bolts with knobs made on them. It came apart in two pieces and the whole bed was available for use.

How strong do you thing this option is? As in, think something could be hauled on top?

Thanks!
