B1 owner - why the hostility toward unions ? As a union steward, I don't think union people think that way at all. The only jobs I've had with decent benefits were the union jobs. Unions brought us the 8 hour workday and weekends. I'd be fine with Mark making money from this site if he could; you don't seem to understand what unions are all about ! The basic idea is just fair treatment, decent wages and benefits for working people. When you see a union, look for bad management. Given fair working conditions, people have no reason to unionise !

Ok!! So really theres no difference from being an anonymous user and an actual member, except people cannot use your name and you have private forums to weed out the morons. Well sounds alright but are there any other benfits?

And by the way I do appreciate everything Mark and actually I thought that it was 30$ a month. Thats actullay pretty descent for 30$ a year. No one really seems to talk about dakotas that are as old as my 1989 3.9 so thats why I`m a bit hesitant to join.

Mark gets so many users because of the domain for starters. It's a common phrase and draws hits based simply on that. Then forums that offer a buttload of info keep the traffic here.

I do disagree that it "costs a lot to run this site". If it does then it's time to shop around. My guess is that this site is burning at the MOST, and I mean ABSOLUTE, 400G of traffic a month. If you go with a co-lo'd server, preferrably a leased one to do away with maintenance cost, it'll run you $150/mo with room to spare. The software obviously isn't costing much because it's not something that requires a great deal of maintenance. (If it does then may I suggest vBulletin.)

So no, running a site, if done smartly anyway, is not expensive. And I'm not talking out my ass, I've run a site bigger than this by a sizeable amount.

That said, the point of whether memebership is worth it or not has nothing to do with how much $$ the site makes, but EVERYTHING to do with what the value is to YOU. This site is EXTREMELY helpful. There is a lot of good info here, and Mark makes it possible to find it all in one spot. So that to me is worth a fee to support it.

If I feel that way then why haven't I joined? Personally I think $30 annually is too steep to show support. If it was $10/year, or even $30 lifetime (3 years internet time IS a lifetime) thene I'd probably do it. But I can't justify $30/year for something that is offered for free. Hey, I'm human!

Anyway, I didn't want to be a dick, but hate seeing the "it costs a lot of money to do this!" defense. It doesn't, as this site is capable of earning anywhere between $1500-5000 monthly at it's current viewership with little to no effort. But that to me speaks volumes for Marks commitment to the visitors of this site. He ISN'T capitolizing on the potential and truly seems content to simply provide a place to hang. Which is what I plan to continue doing. And I will say a much deserved, thanks Mark..

$150/month is quite steep for your average Joe who has other exepenses to worry about...sure it's not much compared to a lot of sites, but if you ain't got the cash, it's a lot of money. It's not like he can fall short on the money either...if he does, this site goes bye-bye til he can pay his bills.

GB, I realize that $150 is a lot of money. However, when that 468x60 banner in the top right does (or should if not) brings in enough monthly to pay for several months at that price, it evens out. But again, content enjoyment of readers is all that truly matters regardless of profit/loss of the site.
