 Subject: Amsoil Mix

I have 5 1/2 quarts of Amsoil and need to perform a change. Can I mix a 1/2 quart of another synthetic to make the complete 6 quarts? The Amsoil syn that I have is ASL 100% 5-30.

Well ... The first thought that popped into my head was ...
... you could order 7 quarts of Amsoil and then have enough for this oil change and the next.
Now, let me answer your actual question ...
Mixing Oils ? Synthetic with another Synthetic
Yes you can use 1/2 quart of another synthetic oil. However, in a situation like yours where you need to mix oils --- make certain that the oil you use is made from the same Base Oil Group --- for instance from a similar Group IV or Group IV base oil -- a similar 100% True Synthetic Oil --- not a "blend", not a "dino" --- and certainly not any aftermarket additives.
In general, Mixing oils is not recommended due to additive package incompatability.
There are only a few incompatability issues with the base oils --- but there can be major concerns with the additive package incompatability when mixing oils. You will most likely wind up with an oil that is inferior (from a performance standpoint) to either of the two oils you mixed.

Mixing Oils ? Synthetic and Conventional Petroleum (Dino)
Mixing Synthetic Oils with Conventional Petroleum Oils ("Dino") is NOT recommended due to base oil incompatability and most important -- additive package incompatability. There are major concerns with additive package incompatability when mixing synthetics and non-synthetics.
You will certainly wind up with an oil that is inferior (from a performance standpoint) to either of the two oils you mixed.
Note: This does not necessarily mean your engine will be damaged, harmed, blow up, or die. If anyone is in a situation where they need to "top-off" with a quart of whatever is available --- their engine will be okay.

A more scientific answer:
Myth: Synthetic Lubricants are not compatible with Petroleum
Untrue. As stated above --- The synthesized hydrocarbons, polyalphaolefins, diesters and other materials that form the base stocks or base oils of high quality name brand synthetics are fully compatible with conventional petroleum (dino) oils. However, it is preferable to not mix your oils.
The reason is this: The functions of additives blended for specific characteristics can be offset --- when oils with different additive packages are put together. For optimal performance, it is better to use the same oil.
