Although not scientific, I did try to be objective! With the NV244 case in AWD I did two moderately fast starts on a snow covered road and then had my daughter do the same. We then did it in the regular 4x4 mode. We both agreed that it fish tailed some in 4x4 but not in AWD. I know, I know it really isn't in all wheel drive but there is something going on there that gave these results. Also, 5.9, 3.92, non LS rear!

People don't talk much about the AWD. I think its a great handling option as well as all around traction. I've never had mine spin or offer to slide and I love crooked roads. Four wheel is a little better going up steep terrian off road over logs and rocks at slow speeds. AWL is much better for driving in snow or wet. It seems to be an aid for towing and stopping too. The Dakota has everything I want in a truck and alot its hard to find in a car.

Once a 4x4 is locked in 4wd it is better for traction than a AWD as it then has a solid connection between the front and rear axile. The AWD has to have some form of slip device similar to a rear axile to account for the different speed of the axiles as the vehicle goes through a turn. It sounds like the 4x4 may have had posi-traction in the rear axile causing it to fishtail.

I have an '02 QC 4.7 Auto AWD w/ LS rear. The AWD feature is great in adverse conditions such as snow, rain slicked roads, and wet grass because you get SOME of the advantages of 4WD, but you don't have the bucking and front end push that is associated with 4WD. Also, with the limited slip, I rarely need 4WD; pretty much only when I'm on the trail or in some western PA goop. I was a bit weary of the AWD option, but I'm glad I got it. In addition to the advantages seen while driving in adverse conditions, it's saved me a bundle on tires. :o)

I just ordered an '04 Caravango and for $200 I selected the traction control option which I'm under the impression only is functional at speeds below 20 mph or something. Any input as to this being a waste of money, gimmicky option??

Limited slip diff. is not traction control, trac control uses the anti-lock brakes to control wheel spin.

I have a 00 quad cab 4.7 with awd. Ihave also owned several 4wd trucks mostly toyota. The awd is much better on slick roads and snow, it does not seem to pull you into the deep snow. It is also much easier to drive(front end does not push or hop). Now in the bush is a very different story. But I am willing to face it, 97% of my driving with this truck is on the road

ok, i have an 04 dakota slt 4.7 with the awd. i
want to lift it up and put bigger tires and stuff
on it, basicly make it a toy... but my question is
if i wanted to put lockers on the truck or a solid
axle in the front, would the awd function mess
with my tranny or transfer case? and if so how
would i fix this problem, would i have to switch
to a dif transmission and transfer or just pull
some kindave sensor plug?? i have never owned a
vehicle with awd so im not sure how it works, i
didnt even realize it had awd till i took it off
road and tried to pull some donuts and it kept
pullin itself out of them. lol i really do like
the awd function for just basic trail riding and
driving in the snow, but idk if its something im
going to want to get rid of for the lifting...
this thing damn sure isnt a humvee so im not sure
how all the electronics work with it...
