Subject: Goodyear Eagle LT's - Worst Tire? IP: Logged
Message: After living with these tires on my 2000 Dak for 3 years now, I think I am qualified to evaluate these Dakota OEM tires.
Before I begin, let me say that in my experience during 45 years of driving and purchasing new vehicles, OEM tires have generally disappointed on at least one of several points - tread wear, traction, ride, handling, etc.
But, I must quickly add that never in my experience has a single OEM tire embodied all of these shortcommings - until now with the Eagle LS.
Which brings me to my question:
Whenever the discussion turns to tires on this site those of you in the know are frequently asked which is the best tire for these trucks, and why. Now, I know we use our trucks differently - street cruiser, off road, highway - but, . . .
The question I am raising is what is the worst tire you have owned and used on your Dakota - and why?
I, for one, would be interested in the answers. I suspect others would be interested, as well.
Thanks,
MD

Message: With about 30+ years behind the wheel I must say I have my picks.
I have purchased new Ford, Chevy, and Dodge trucks.
All were two wheel drive so I can't speak on any off road issues.
I think my 97 Dak had Goodyear Trackers, anyway they were good tires. They were on the truck for about 65K miles.
My 01 Dak came with Goodyear F1 Eagels, I only have 8K on them. I have noticed they break loose quite easy but it may be the truck, it runs strong.
I had a Ford once that came with Corsa GT's, they stand out in my memory. They were the best OEM tires I think I owned.
I for the most part like OEM tires with the exception of Firestone. I have never had any luck with any Firestones.
With me the problem is, I'm cheap. When I replace the OEM tires I convince myself that I may not have the car or truck much longer and go with off brands.
But I can say that Cooper and Douglas tires have been the worst for me, but you get what you pay for.

Message: I've never owned Cooper or Douglas rubber, so I can't comment. I'm with you on Firestones - I had Firestone Steeltex on the Ford F250 Powerstroke I owned ('97); there was a good reason I re-tired with Michelin LTX/MS at 32,000 miles. I think the reason I dislike the Goodyear Eagle LS's on the Dakota may have something to do with the fact they really are not truck tires - they are "boulevard cruisers". When one uses a truck as a truck, their shortcommings become VERY noticible.

Message: Worst tires I've owned were BFGoodrich. Goodyears suk too.
Best snow tire is Bridgestone Blizzak. That will stick to ice. But I don't live in snow anymore.
Best tires I've ever used for on and off road is Yokohama. Been running Yokos for 5-6 years now. I currently run Yoko's on all my cars/trucks.

Message: I replaced my Good Tears with the Kumho same size H rated tires and love'em! They are quieter, better handling and much improved wet traction as well....plus a bargain at the TireRack.
My two sense.

Message: When I bought my truck, Michelins were on it. They were car tires... I suppose the person who owned the truck drove it more like a car. When loading the bed down. the tires were literally driving on their sidewall.
When they became bald, or nearly so, I bought off brand Michelin light truck tires called Phantom. They have served me well.
I've always looked for an agressive tread on the tire. A good tread will work well in heavy rain and also throw snow.
