Subject: coolant explosion, HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
hey,

my fiancee has a '98 dak w3.7l v6.

came home the other nite, saying that the engine was smoking. as soon as i got out there, the familiar sweet aroma of engine coolant hit me. looked under the hood and it was a sea of green!

i figured it was a burst hose, but at nite i couldn't see which one. i'll be able to look at it better today after work, but is there any other cause for this? do water pumps explode like that? i've just heard of them dripping out coolant, not puddles and lakes inside the engine compartment.

thanks!

chad

I'd check the radiator hoses. Then the heater hoses. If those seem alright, then look at the water pump. Never heard of any exploding. They usually just leak out of the weap hole.

I've seen where a pinhole will gush coolant. Be safe and change the hoses. ALL of them!

Coolant hoses can deteriorate from the inside while still looking ok outside. To be safe, replace all belts and hoses every 5 years. Some say 2 or 3, But the only time I've seen them go in less than 5 was a Ford factory defect.

I had a radiator go when the plastic tank on top cracked. I'd fill the system up with water from the hose and run it. You should be able to see where the leak is by chasing the dripping water.

I would have to say that it's the water pump...mine did the exact same thing...there is a valve on the water pump that you can not see when it is installed...and when the pump goes it is designed to release all the pressure and it just spues coolant everywhere

CJ, you ignorant slut. Just because your water pump spewed coolant you think it couldn't be a hose ?
