Subject: Help - AC burning smell? 2000 4.7L Quad
IP: Logged

Message:
I tried posting last night, but it looks like it did not make it out on the board, so I'm reposting it.

I have a 2000 4.7L Quad Cab with 75k miles on it. Last weekend, we went on a road trip and on the way back, the AC started smoking and stopped working. It started working again, but was making an awful squealing noise.

I thought I would wait and see if we could make it a while longer without working on it, but it happened again last night on the way home. When we got home, I popped the hood and saw smoke coming from the AC compressor (?) and the belt had slipped almost off.

I need to know if this is something I can fix myself, or if this is going to require the full condensor/compressor replacement? Since I have been unemployed for the past few months, we are trying to conserve money, so any advice you have on how to fix it for the least amount of money would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason
