Subject: Switched to Mobil 1 and something's up
IP: Logged

Message:
I switched to Mobil 1 10w-30 and a Napa Gold filter and now when I start up first thing in the morning, I get the "check guages" light for about a half second because the oil pressure is still bottomed out. Then it starts moving. Other starts during the day are fine, it's just when it sits overnight.
Before when I'd start, the guage would jump to the first line right away and then start to move up after about a second or so.
I changed the filter back to Delco which is what I had been using before. It still reacts the same way in the morning which leads me to think it may be the oil. Can't see how but it was fine before.
It's an 03 3.9 v6.
Anybody ever have this happen to them when switching to Mobil 1.

I think that's normal. Mine was like that too. I asked around adout that and was told it was normal. The dealer even replaced the OP sender and it's still the same. Benn driving it that way for a year and it's alright. I wouldn't sweat it. If you're really concerned, take it to the dealer.

I would say that your oil filter is one that
doesnt have the drainback valve, my nissan's
valves would clatter for 2 seconds when cold
starting due to oil pressure. The factory oil
filter is recommended b/c of this valve included
in theirs.
I drove about 60k miles with the wrong filter
type before I was told that it could cause
excess valve-train wear if you didn't use the
right filter.
I would use Amsoil and filters, due to the
better price, longer drain intervals, higher
quality than Mobil 1.
I just made the switch.

Does it specifically say to use 10w-30? I use 5w-30 in
my V8 and the needle jumps up just fine during the
morning.

"The viscosity grade (for example, 5W-30) tells you the
oil's thickness, or viscosity. A thin oil has a lower
number and flows more easily, while thick oils have a
higher number and are more resistant to flow."

It has nothing to do with the Oil! Blame Dodge if you have to blame someone. Those Napa Gold filters are "wix" and they are the best. I run the bigger Napa gold (same as the Ford FL1A) on both my Dakota, Durango and Mustang. I run Mobile 5w30 in Blue top in both of the Dodges. The Ford gets Amsoil. The ford has HEET so lets just leave it at that!

Check again....
The flow is among the lowest compared to other leading brands, Amsoil being the highest, FRAM is WAY down there with WIX flow numbers.

The manual recommends 10w-30 for the 3.9 and I had Castrol GTX 10w-30 along with an AC Delco filter in it before with no problems. It's just since this recent oil change.
I know the Delco filter probably isn't as good as the Napa Gold but I figured I would give it a shot and put a new Delco on because I certainly didn't think a good quality synthetic oil would cause it to do that. I didn't expect to see a change in pressure buildup but the fact that the pressure stays down long enough for the "check guages" light to flicker on sort of makes me feel a bit uneasy.

Could be the oil, maybe the synthetic is thinner when you start up even though it's rated at the same weight oil. I had a lot of funny noises in my Nissan valve-wise and always ran Mobil 1. It's not all it's cracked up to be and I'm glad I know that now cuz I was under the impression that it's the best. It's not. AMS is. By far. The Barney-oil is worthless by far, worse than Q State conventional. Just get AMS. I do hate when "new" engines start making noise I know aren't normal. Like the valves in my nissan. they didn't clatter until 30,000 miles on it and using mobil 1 filters without the proper drain-back valve.

This "normal" they are diagnosing the problems as are more truly, "these things normally F_uck up so just live with it".
I've heard 200,000 mile motors that are silent and smooth. It's just bad engineering on behalf of lack of R&D, which is not always the engineers faults, but rather the Coporate timeline.
Plenty of companies sell things that are less than what they are advertised to be and get away with it and make millions and even billions.
I think the 3.9 is one of those. Maybe not though, I hope not for your case. The 4.7 had a LOT of testing in the V8 Cherokees with very good results before being put in the Dak's, and that's why I trusted it. It's not that the 318 isn't a good motor, it's just not as "tightly" designed.
All in all though, it's probably mostly how you drive a car as to how long it'll last.
Sorry for the long post,
I always feel like saying something about something......

I've been using Mobil 1 10W-30 since I drove my truck off the lot in July of '97, and it has always had that problem.

I too was told that it was normal, and I think it is. Whatever that means. My truck has always run great, so I have never really worried abut it.

I do think that it is related to the way synthetic acts at start-up. When the motor is hot or it's really hot out, the truck has a tendency to do it more.

I have thought about about switching to AMSOIL, but haven't yet made the jump.

That's my take.

When I lived in Maine, one winter I switched from Castrol 5W-30 to Mobil 1 0W-30 and had zilcho problems. In fact, the oil pressure guage appeared to move much quicker upon start-up. Only problem I had with Mobil 1 was in my 83 Dodge W-150 with a Edelbrock intake. After 2 years of normal oil, I changed to Mobil 1 10W-30 and it leaked thru the intake bolts.

What you are describeing is perfectly normal! 1 second is insignificant. If it was 30 seconds you would have a problem but anything less then that is fine. Synthetic oil adheres to the metal surfaces for more then a month in most cases so you never have a very dry start. Your oil sender could even be sticking at some point in it's travel but otherwise fine. So long as you get positive oil pressure in less then 30 sec. minum 8 psi at idle (I like to see 25-35psi at idle) and 10 psi for every 1000 rpms above idle you are fine.

I appreciate everyone's input on this. It makes me feel better.
It's not alot of time but it didn't act that way before the oil change. I figured if the pressure was down long enough for the "check guages" light to come on, it may be something to be concerned about. Pressure otherwise was fine and that's why I initially though it may be the filter.

All of your lights should come on when you first start the vechile up. Usualy a light indicates less then 12 psi but unless you are under 8 psi OEM's will not even replace anything under warranty. I doubt you have a problem since most modern vechiles oil sender/switch is tied to the fuel pump. If the oil pressure drops to low the power to the fuel pump relay is cut. Another question to ask yourself would be" What properties of a man made synthetic oil could enable it to dis-obey the law of physics governing hydralics?".The answere is zero. Another thing to consider is that oil pressure is a measurement of an oil resistence to flowing/pumping. If the new oil is of the same same wt then it might flow so much better compared to old dino oil that while you have plenty of inetial oil flow it take longer for pressure to build up due to enhanced oil flow ie less resistance to pumping through your block. To make this more clear i offer the following: A car has 40psi of oil pressure @ 1500 RPM with a 10W30 synthetic oil in it. Then the owner decides that he needs more pressure so he switchs to 60Wt dino oil and "WOW" the oil pressure shots up to 90psi at 1500 RPM's. Has the owner really done anything to increase lubrication to the engine? More then likely he has not done himself or his car anything good because the increased pressure is due to the oils resistance to flow resistance to flow is not what the measure of oil pressure is their for. These are just ideas to toss around in your head.

I put Mobil 1 10W-30 and the Mobil 1 #204 filter on my 3.9 at 3500 miles...1 oil change ago...it's acted perfectly normal, no problems or weird noises. It's time for another change at 7500 miles.

The best thing I did was install the B&M tranny cooler almost as soon as I brought the truck home. I can take the stick out right after shutting the engine off, and the fluid is cool and almost transparent. I about freaked once, because I didn't think that I had any fluid in the tranny...it was so clear, I had a hard time seeing it on the stick.

NO, Mobil1 is not "the cause". The light being on for that "short period" does not mean oil isn't there at the bearing, just hasn't built up enough pressure to tun off the idiot light.

when you first start up all of your idiot lights should come on for no more than 6-8 seconds (according to the little hand book in your glove box that came with your truck). The Oil pressure sending unit is located at the top of the block and oil pump is located underneath your motor (hangs in the deep end on the oil pan). That second delay is just the time it takes for the oil pump to pump the oil from the bottom of the oil pan to the top of the motor.

I would like to chime in on filters since I just recently did a lot of updated research on filtering along with other lubrication issues for your engines for our magazine (Northern Rodder Magazine and Southern Rodder Magazine) articles this spring

I have to take some exception with the broad-brushed statement that great flow numbers make a good overall filter choice. In other words, not knocking any particular brand here or anyone.....flow is important, but other issues are as equally important in your choices as well.

Other just as important features a quality filter should have are a metal by-pass valve, this is very important if the filter gets clogged for any reason, an anti-drainback valve is also an excellent wanted feature, a high surface area for proper filtering (ow filtering areas can produce superb flow numbers but lousy filtering), and the ability to trap and hold small particles. Put flow in there as well, and they all add up to a great product when balanced.

One comment about WIX. WIX makes one of the best (may not be the very best) filters in the world and furnishes quality manufacturers such as Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, NAPA and others namebrand quality filters. They do it well and I recommend them after doing much research. There are others that are good too, Mobile one seems to have its stuff together as well.

Just some more engineering two sense!

Well, when I changed from Mobil 1 oil and filters to AMSoil oil and filters yesterday, the AMSoil filter appeared 10% larger overall, so it seems to have a larger overall filtering surface area, giving it a more effective flow.

I could be wrong though, but they do have the best overall synthetic oil, so why would they skimp on the filters they sell with it, given that it is the combination of the 2 that provide you with extended service from an engine.

I will go with them until convinced otherwise.

Thanks for the input.

Mr H. you are a dolt. Mobile1 is a good engine oil, regardless of what your minimal amount of brain cells believes. Any top engine builder will tell you that WIX makes one of the best filters out there, so there is nothing to dispute. If you want to preach your rhetoric, lets get to it. I know that you are not a scientific sort, other wise you would have never made the last post.
