 Subject: Clunking and Grinding in 2000 V6 Dakota

I just returned again from the dealer dicouraged. My Dakota has a clunk and grind whenever I turn at slow speed or anything over 60km. Control rod bolts have been tightened and leaf spring clips put in but to no avail. They say this is normal? Anyone else have this?

I have the exact same problem in my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318. What you described is the same thing I got, but I dont know about anything over 60km. I took it in and they said there was a pin or clip for the front brakes that was in backwards, but they repaired it any I still have the problem, only its not as frequent anymore. Its really annoying though.

Ball joints. Im not sure if this is what you are discribing but i have a 99 durango and during a turn (like at a traffic light to turn left) it goes clunk and you can feel it in the car and even more through the steering wheel. The mechanics will just tell you its normal because they dont want to work on it. (i used to work at a dodge dealer) When i worked there there were a lot of people comming in with the same problem and the parts needed to fix them were on back order i think that that is the big flaw of the truck. Go and get it fixed i think they improved the new ball joints.

To be more presise it is the upper ball joint.
Good luck. Almost every dakota has this problem. Some worse then others. They fixed it for 2001. Also if you keep driving it its ok its not going to fall apart on you. When you go to the dealer dont pest them on time give them the truck and be nice. Also don't check up on your car. The mechanics hate that it puts them under pressure. Plus if you say you need it by this and this time it and they give you a hard time but then agree it equals fast cut corner work that leads to you returning. Just give them the car and leave. It goes on shop order and your car will be in line to have work done on it.

I am in the process of purchasing a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4x4....am I making a mistake? When I test drove the 2.5L it purred like a kitten but had the guts of a mouse...I test drove the 3.9L and it had a rough idle( I swear to god if a chick sat on the stick shift she get off in a matter of minutes!) They look great, but do they run like a Chevy. COnfused in NY.

I have a 2001 Quad Cab. I have heard a loud clunk only once when making a sharp turn into a parking space. As for Jeffs reply about buying a new Dakota, try test driving a 4.7 stick. Put a Thrush Glass pack on it and all non motor noises are gone. I love mine.

My truck is 'fixed'-mine was the rear differential-possibly no fluid or something-they added something and it runs better. Also replacing upper control arm and ball joint...hopefully this solves the problem. Only took them 10 months to figure it out!!! LOL What are the chances that this caused more probs?? ARGGGGGG Let me know

go to any place that will change your oil and have them change the rear differential fluid. Then make sure they put the Limited slip differential fluid additive in with the new fluid. This will solve the grinding at low speed turns, and should correct the high speed problem if that is a whining sound coming from the rear end. Good luck!! I just went through this last weekend. Mine is fixed. FYI. I looked in all the lit. I have on my '98 Dak. 4x4 V8, no mention of the Limited Slip additive. I even bought a Haynes shop manual for it. No mention of the additive in there either. That did solve the problem, however. I found the info on this web site from other people like you who have had the problem. Stay tuned to this web site for good info on your truck.... Kudos to the web master..
Good luck all... I love my truck even though it often scares me...I just learned to use the full half of the tank this weekend. ran out of gas going up a hill... guage said 1/4 of a tank...what a hog!!!

The brake pads are directional (there is an L and and R stamped on the outside pad. If the pads are reveresed the brakes will make a terrible grinding noise when turing or driving slow. To determine if this is your problem, lightly apply the brake when the noise starts. if the noise stops then it is worth investigating the brake pads. The outer pad has a large antirattle spring on it and it must be orientated in the correct direction. For reference the left hand side of the car is the drivers side.

As an update, I had to redo the diff fluid in my truck in Sept...seems this is going to be about an every 6 month service dealio for this truck. Dealership (took it to a 5 star) said this is not normal but not an issue?!?! When the fluid is repalced it runs fine...go figure?!?

My 2000 dodge dakota has 38200 miles on it. I took it in at 32000 miles had ball joints replaced. Now I was told 6 months later and 6000 miles that they are bad again. Chrysler wont fix this not under warrenty any more. Is there a recall or TSB on this?
