I RECENTLY PUCHASED A NEW 2000 DAKOTA QUAD CAB 4X4 WITH THE STANDARD 3.9L V6 ENGINE. DURING THE BREAK-IN PERIOD, THE ENGINE PROGRESSIVELY GOT LOUDER AND SEEMED TO LOOSE POWER. AT 3500 MILES I HAD THE DEALER CHECK IT, AND (OF COARSE) WAS TOLD THAT SINCE "THE ENGINE LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING NORMAL". SINCE THEN, I HAD TO ORDER SOME LOWER DOOR SEALS AND WHEN I RETURNED TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM INSTALLED (UNDER WARRANTY), I ONCE AGAIN COMPLAINED ABOUT THE LOSS OF POWER AND SOUND OF THE ENGINE. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING FINE. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS???? OR AM I JUST CRAZY... THE TRUCK HAS 4500 MILES ON IT AND ALREADY FEELS LIKE IT NEEDS A TUNE UP....ANY ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

DJ, your problem sounds like either the truck is "broke in". By that I mean that your truck doesn't have that new truck sound to it. My 2000 Quad Cab did the same thing. Have you checked your air cleaner lately? I also lost alot of power shortly after "breaking in the truck". I solved my problem by adding a K & N air cleaner and a sat back dual exhaust system from Dyna Flow.
The K & N will will set you back about $50.00 and you will notice a huge difference. (By the way, the air cleaner for the 3.9 and the 5.2 and 5.9 are the same) The exhaust system will set you back arounf $275.00. Both upgrades are well worth your money, but the duals do add a deaper and a much louder sound.

I recently puschased 2001 dakota quad cab 4x2 with 4700 miles,I have a few concerns. The oil pressure drops to the lowest point of the normal operating range when stopped.Upon acceleration the pressure goes up to the highest point of the normal range. You can also hear a slight tapping sound like the lifters. I've had it back to the dealer they say it's normal, but I have my doubt's.
