I had a sludge problem with my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7L V-8. It starts out as the foamy residue (oil emulsion) in the oil filler tube. Next thing you know you need to purchase a new engine. The sludge in my case blocked the oil passages on the RH camshaft. Once this happened, the cam journals got so hot that they exploded and sent pieces of the girdles through the engine. I never even had a derease in oil pressure. It was still reading 70 lbs of oil pressure even with the RH cam wasted. When I tore the engine apart, I thought I had been sabotaged . It looked as if someone had poured a cup of dirt down my oil filler tube. I was running Mobil 1 full synthetic. The oil had turned to sludge and varnish. There was asphalt like material on the cam chains and on the top end. Also, the oil pan was full of sludge. Now I find out that this is a standard problem on the 4.7L motor. There seems to be a lot more Durangos with this problem. I haven't found a whole lot of info on the Jeeps. Needless to say $6000.00 out of pocket on a car you owe $15000.00 on is ridiculous. Dodge/Jeep should make this right. Does anyone know if this seems to be a problem that manifests itself in colder environments. All please e-mail with your stories. pcrump@mwr.is

good luck yes it is only a build up / condensation in the colder weather but even with oil changes it does not come out you need to have the oil pan dropped and a COMPLETE flush done. I still owe $20,000 on mine and DODGE just said TO bad. PLEASE join the class action lawsuit about oil sludge at WWW.BIGCLASSACTION.COM the more that join the sooner the settlement.

Some how I found this sight looking for the baffle everyone on here is talking about. This guy I work with just bought a 2000 Durango with the 4.7L, him and I were looking at it. I opened his oil fill cap to find his had a baffle that mine did not have. He had some foaming but very little. His truck also had a plug inside the cap. It seemed to me that this helped the problem a great deal. I know my truck has the foaming pretty bad. I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7L 4x4, I really like the truck but not the problem with the foaming. If anyone knows the part no. for the plug and baffle pleas e-mail me at expcraftsman@yahoo.com. I would really appreciate it.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L engine. My extended warranty expired 500 miles ago. Last Thursday I was almost home when the oil pressure gauge went to zero at the red light. As I started out again, it went just above 40 psi. I normally see it at about 50 psi. When I checked the oil, I found the foamy residue (oil emulsion) in the oil filler tube. I had just come back from NY where I experienced -3 degree temperatures for two days. I changed the oil and filter which sent it back up to 50 psi for about 30 miles. Last night, the oil pressure started to fall, then jumped, then fell to zero as I arrived home. Note: the engine temperature stayed normal on both occasions. Please let me know if I should have the oil pan dropped and a COMPLETE flush done as Kevin suggested. I also posted a complaint to WWW.BIGCLASSACTION.COM as Kevin suggested. First go to:

then about half way down find: "Daimler Chrysler (premature engine failure due to oil sludge)"
