I also have an '02 Dakota QC 4.7 auto ,loaded. I have 46k on it and it's never missed a beat. The only complaint I would have is the poor milage 15.5 winter and 17.5 summer . I hope I don't get this problem , If I hear of any solutions I'll submit them here. Good luck

I adjusted my idle with the screw behind the linkage on the TB. Idles at 600 rpm all the time now. Whoda thunk it. Wonder why the dealer didn't try this one of the five times I had the truck in for the low, rough idle.

Great news, I got a new 2003 truck with a 4.7! I've had it two weeks and now have 400 miles on the engine. Bad news, today it took a sh1t on me three times! Twice was at stop signs, and once was pulling into my driveway. The first time I was sure I'd been hit from behind due to the "tapping" feeling described in many earlier posts. I'm P1SSED! 39 thousand dollars paid, a week later I find out I'll need new ball joints in about a year and a half, and now I'm reading about a problem that should have been fixed YEARS ago. Has anyone found the definitive solution to this yet? Should I even let the dealer have a shot at it? CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK FOR THIS F*CKED UP PIECE OF SH!T???

I just recently bought a 2000 Dodge durango with a 4.7 automatic and I am having the idle stumbling problem also. I have had a new battery put in and have had the air intake adjusted. I am at my wits end. I am getting ready to take it back to the mechanic. Any ideas? I was thinking of trying that computer chip. Anyone else tried it? Does anyone know if that computer chip is compatible with the durango?

DId you try changing fuel filter, Air filter? Check connection on tps sensor? does your torque converter lock and unlock when driving???

I have an 03 QC 4X4 With a 4.7 auto. I have the stumbling idle problem also but only once in a while. I bought a superchip programmer and will install it in a day or 2. I will repost then and let you know if it fixes the problem.

I have a 2002 4.7 auto and my idle is sometimes not the smoothest. But cleaning the idle valve and gapping the copper plugs to 40 thou. brings the idle back to an evev 600. When the idle valve is dirty and the plugs are gapped too far the idle will stumble to 500 and the oil preesure gauge will fall to the lower third. Plugs gapped too far will also hurt your performance when the engine is under high cylinder pressure. It is harder to spark across a large gap when cylinder pressures are high such as when hard accelerating or going up a hill.

I have a 2002 Durango with the same idling issue. I figured out it was a computer issue and decided to spend the money on the JET stage 1 chip. My truck is quieter and no stumbling at idle. Screw the dealerships after 3 trips, no Check engine = no problem!!! Not exceptable!!!

i have a 92 dakota and i cannot get my air con to engage from the inside of my truck, i have recharge it by jumping it from the square fuse under the hood and that fuse still works. what do i do?

I have an '01 reg. cab, 4.7 with a 5-speed, with 80k miles. In neutral the idle will go up to 12000 for a bit then drop back down and then back up again. It happens much less whenever the motor is more warmed up. Anybody else having this problem?

Ok- It looks as if it has been a while since anyone has posted anything on this. I wonder if this blog is long gone but Im desparate and I have an issue with my 2005 JEEP Wrangler. Im coming to a stop light, I stop. The light turns green, I step on the gas pedal then brake suddenly (reacting to traffic) even tho my foot is on the brake, the JEEP wants to jump forward, and the RPMS jump, and sometimes it stalls. I just bought this May 1st 2006, and its been in the shop 4 times and going back on 7/31/2006 cause they thought they fixed it but they havent.
Have any clues???

I found that my 2000 dakota 4.7 was not idleing like it should it would go from 700 rpms to 1500 rpms even at highway speeds it would jump in rmps similarly, it turns out it was as simple as removing the Idle air controller which is located just below the Throttle Position sensor, and cleaning it with carberator cleaner. It was black, covered with what looks to be black soot. I clean it thoroughly along with the throttle body and It runs like a champ.

During my internet searches for various problems with my 1998 Dodge Dakota, I have found numerous problems related to the fuel system, the ignition system, and the transmission. My Dakota has 93K miles on it, and it still runs strong. Anyway, I had a similar problem with my Dakota (5.2 ltr., auto, 4x4, club cab), and the dealership found that the irratic idle was related to two switches. The first was the low output speed sensor on the transmission (engine code P0720). The second was the throttle position sensor. I am not saying that this is the solution to your problem, however, it is a good place to start. I had the work done a week ago, and I have read that these sensors break down with age, and wear. Needless to say, the truck is running fine to this point. Good luck, and hope this helps.

I have a 2000 4.7L V8. 168k on the truck.
Weather turned cold and for the first time ever the truck had problems staying started when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse.
Thanks to everyone here because it seems to have been fixed. Solution:
I bought some Valvoline Throttle Body Cleaner. In particular I had to clean the IAC (intake air controller) which on the right side of the throttle body - the lower of the two plugs. Black gunk all in it.
Be sure to reset the PCM once you do all this. (Disconnect the negative battery cable and turn the key to start for 20 seconds.) Mine barely wanted to start until I remembered to reset that PCM.
While I was at it I put in higher octane gas, cleaned the PCV valve and checked all my vacuum hose connections. It all looked good though.

HOwever,
Why would you run higher octane gas?
Where you having 'pinging', knocking or pre-detonation issues?- cause that's the only reason to run a higher octane gas, which raises the flash point.
If you your engine was not having pre-detonation issues, ALL you're doing is wasting money.
