I have a problem with the engine stumbling at 2400 rpm and it some times backfiring. There are no problem codes, the dealer says they can find nothing wrong, but the problem is still there. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong.

99% sure the problem is caused from a worn out oil pump drive gear. seen quite a few 3.9litres, including my own, with the same problem.

My dak. runs fine when cold. When it worms up to about 200 degrees it starts having problems. When i get on the gas hard and i have it reved up to about 3500rpm's it starts to spit and sputter. I have changed my air temp. intake sensor already. If anyone knows please write me back. THANKS

I have a '94 with the same engine and same problems. Been trying to resolve it for some time now until recently I had the timing chain assembly replaced due to it making a severe rattle. On the way home from the dealer it seemed like new with no noise or sputter.

I have a 1987 Dakota 3.9l automatic with the same symptoms, It turns out to be the O2 sensor inside the carb. Nobody makes a replacement for it. If you disconnect the wiring harness to the carb, It will run full rich, Just like when it is cold and the problem will go away, gas mileage will go away also.

Carl, your O2 sensor is screwed into your exhaust pipe in front of your cat-con. Do you possibly meen the throttle position sensor?

Yes there is an O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe. The 1987 dakotas came with a feedback carb, and there is an O2 sensor inside the carb that provides feedback on riching or leaning out the fuel mixture depending on information from the sensor in the exhaust and engine temperature. that is why when it is cold the engine runs fine, because the carb sensor is not functioning until the engine temp warms up a bit.
