When making a fiberglass enclosure you should really re-enforce it with MDF so there is no flex, that will prevent any possible cracks. 1/4" thick would be just fine, so long as you do use a MDF ring where the sub mounts to. So basically you want to give it enough support to stay rigid then it shouldn't really matter how thick it is, so long as there are enough coats of fiberglass to prevent leaks.

Fiberglass is alot of work. If you dont really know what your doing its gonna be a major project. If you can, i would recomend using mdf and then if you want a cool top or whatever, u can try to fiberglass it. But deffinately reinforce it w/ mdf wood.

you want to know how well here it goes. built the bottom and sides of the box out of 1/2 mdf" can by at home depot" next cut out to circles around 13 inches. with the mdf cut 2 strips longer than the height of your box, staple or secure them down.take your two cut out and fasten them to the 2 straps . next you will need some material kinda of like sweat shirt material. lat that over the rings and staple one side down, pull the other tight. if this sems like to much work let me know. I custom make boxes. if you want go to www.glendalecustoms.com and look at some of the fiberglass work done.

Fiberglass is a lot of work. In no way is 1/4 inch thick, thick enough. You gotta reinforce it with maybe some mesh and make as many layers as you can you want to strong enough for an elephant to stand on it even for just one sub. And of course do the MDF rings for the subs to fit into and make a mdf box to put all your carpet or fleece(the best) to attach to it. Fiberglass is a lot of work you have to know what your doing, it gets very hot and is very powerful smell so you must work with a respirator and well ventalated area. Lot of sanding and finishing work have fun man.

i want to build a fiberglass box but i dont kno how. i have built boxes out of mdf but i hav never used fiberglass. i picked up some fiberglass resin at home depot. is that good enough or is there a better way?

If I were you guys with now experience working with glass, then I would put forth a little more effort by searching the net or at least go to a dedicated audio forum, where they do it all the time. Since there are so many ways and technics to build a box up from fiberglass, it would be a big waste of time to try and put text based FAQ right here in the message board that will only get buried in a couple of days only to have the question asked again.
Go to google, and search for something like "fiberglass kick panels", there are a lot of sites that tell you how to do that, then you will get ideas on how to adapt those skills to something larger such as a sub box.
One tip I will give though, follow the directions when mixing the resin/hardener and MAKE SURE you are in a good ventilated area, DO NOT try to glass in your vehicle unless you have GOOD air flow through the cabin, this stuff is also messy and will screw up your carpet like no other.
I would practice making a small mold, like for a 5 1/4" speaker or something, just to get the hang of what you are doing and see what you did wrong (and you will do something wrong). Also, wasting a little bit of material on a small project is better than screwing up a large one.
Fiberglass kicks/enclosures is really not that hard, it just takes practice (remember that first sub box you built back in the day out of crappy plywood, a thousands nails, and 8 tubes of caulk? - same thing, it just takes practice).

Agreed, when I was building my sub enclosures I didn't find anything on this site, but there are some good sites out there. Spend a night researching the subject so you know what your up against. This isn't like building a MDF box where you can stand back and ponder which step is next. You have about 10-15 minutes once you mix the resin to get it applied and the glass stuck down good.
Mr. Obvioug Guy is 100 and 10% right, do a small project first to experiment with.

I was wondering if any one can help? I want to build a fiberglass sub box for two 15" Rockfordfosgate punch HX2's. i have built sub boxes out of MDF. But i dont know how thick the fiberglass has to be and do i build the whole box out of fiberglass or what.Do i build a skeloten all the way around the box i have worked with body filler and i do body work very well dose fiberglass work in a similer way as bondo body filler?

Do as much out of MDF as possible and the complex curves with fiberglass, sub mounting ring out of MDF too. Fiberglass is glass fabric that is impregnated with a resin the consistency of maple syrup. Not like Bondo where you apply it with a spreader. It takes alot of layers of cloth and resin to make a strong box. Mine were small and I used 6-8 layers of glass. You want the box strong enough where you can jump up and down on it and it won't move. Bracing is a good idea for a large box. Buy the supplies at Home Depot or a boat/marine shop. If you doing 2-15's go to the boat shop because your going to use at least a gallon of resin and a lot of cloth and mat.
Do a search on the internet to figure out how to fiberglass sub boxes/enclosures and do a small project before attempting the sub enclosure. If not you might end up with a big gooey funky looking mess on your hands.

i want to have a tv in my car (preferably in dash) thta the driver can see easily and i want it to run its sound through the cars speakers. however when i play music i want that to be through a cd/mp3 player and run that through the same speakers. is there any way i can do this or do i really need to? will i have all the options and be able to tweak things like my bass w/ an in dash tv only? please help! how much would it cost?

i built a speaker box for my 93 dodge dakota to fit under the seats in the ext cab. for all you gen II owners out there know that there is very little space to work with. so i used a mdf frame and for the bottom i used liqiud fiberglass. if any one is interested email me at hossman02@hotmail.com. ill be glad to help. oh by the way it was my first time with fiberglass and it was pretty easy.

NOOOO BONDO! Chit is weak.
Each layer of fiberglass requires a layer of glass cloth or glass mat. The resin saturates the cloth/mat and sticks it to the previous layer of cloth/mat. Cloth is strong once it's saturated by the resin and hardened, resin is weak without the cloth, so don't use too much resin on the build-up of layers. You want just enought to saturate the cloth and stick it down, you don't want it running all over the place and puddeling up or dripping all over the place.
The best advice I can give you is to......
1- Experiment with a small project first, not the enclosure.
2- Measure the resin and hardener accurately, too much hardener and the batch will kick realy quick and turn the unused mixed resin into a big gooey mess in a couple of minutes, too little hardener and it will take for ever for it to set.
3- Apply the layers within 2 hours of each other as fiberglass resin will give off a waxy film and not adhere correclty past 2 hours. You can apply the next layer as soon as the previous layer has hardened, 20-30 minutes should be OK.
4- Look online for sites that explain fiberglassing, and learn from other peoples mistakes. Search for "fiberglass sub box" "fiberglass sub enclosure" "fiberglass kick panels" etc.
