Subject: Amp problem question
IP: Logged

Message:
I installed a Lanzar VIBE218 about 3 weeks ago in my truck to power the loaded MTX Thunderform. It was working well for the first 2 weeks and then I noticed one day that the subs weren't firing. After that they seemed to be working again so I didn't think much of it. But once again this weekend it happened again, so while it was happening I checked the amp and the "protect" light is lit. I have tried resetting the amp, resetting the amp with the speaker leads disconnected, and checked all of the cabling and connections.

Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem with the amp? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Possible causes (just guessing here) and ways to fix:

amp overheating - put it somewhere that it can get some air flow to stay cool.

wrong ohm load - wire the subs differently. Some amps claim to be 2 ohm stable but can't really handle the load when pushed hard.

bad ground - use the same gauge wire as power wire and scrape away all the paint at the point where the ground bolt is.

low input voltage - check power wire make sure the connector at the battery is clean and tight.

Thanks John. I'll have to check the ground again to make sure that all the paint is off, but I'm pretty sure that it is. I'll also check the connection at the battery like you suggested.

As for possibly overheating, it's always been cool to the touch (so I don't think that it's overheating or anything.)

And for the wrong ohm load, MTX said that they have the loaded thunderform configured to be a 4 ohm load. So who knows.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

or your gain could be set too high....my friend had that problem with his subs/ amp....his gain was too high...and also his input level was set way too high so the amp was clipping and it would send itself into protection mode

Yeah, check your gain level. That gain knob isn't there to crank up your tunes. If you need to crank the gains to make it louder, then get another (larger) amp.

Good point about the gains... I forgot about that. Some headunits today put out 4 volts while the amp might only take 2 volts of signal.

I had the 4V preamp and 2V amp dilema with my new Pioneer HU and old amps when installing my new system. I talked to RF and Soundstream about the 4V signal and they said not to run the 2V input amps with a 4V preamp stereo output, even if the gains are turned down, since the 4V signal can over drive the input section of the amp and put the amp into clipping,,, meltdown. Clipping isn't good since amps are harmed by amplifying DC or a clipped signal.

well, it seems as though I have tried everything, so I deceided to try hooking the subs up to the amp while not being bridged. This seems to work. Since I hooked it up this way about 3 days ago now the amp has yet to fail and go into a protect status. I am going to end up sending the amp back to the person I bought it from since it should be able to run in bridged mode. Man this stinks.
