Hey all.
I have built my second box (in 1 week)...
the first time i fired towards the passenger side (from drivers side). The 2nd box i fired it upwards (assuming it wouldnt make a diff).
Well, i was quite unhappy cause of how it sounded. so i flipped the box on its side and fired it forward. it sounds alot better now.
I was wondering if anyone has figured out which direction is best? so far i think the sideways method is best.
anyone else have another oppinion?

most people, assuming you don't have a wall, say that firing your sub down is the best. It depends on quite a few things though as to which is going to sound better

I found that back is best,down is good,subs make a difference too,some will sound good firing forward,some will sound like crap forward,firing back requires about 2 inches between the sub and the rear wall,which you may not want to give up.

Depending on Sub Size and Sub Box, moving the sub between 1-6" away from a solid object(interior panel preferably or seat back if needed) will greatly improve the amount and quality of bass sound. I have found experimenting with different positions until you find the "sweet spot". Unlike tweeters which are very directional with a short wavelength, sub frequencies(less than 120Hz) have a very long wavelength and are considered non-directional, that is why you can place the sub most anywhere and still feel/hear the bass subject to the above suggestions on best placement. The more surfaces the bass frequency has to bounce off from and greater the distance it can travel before bouncing(not including initial placement with close proximity to solid object) will effectively amplify the bass signal, it is the law of physics. As an example, the same sub in the same box placed in a Durango will sound "bigger" with proper placement than than in a CC Dak, this is due to the larger space within the vehicle and more distance for bass frequency to travel.
I Have built many high end systems in automobiles and boats over the past 10+ years that are still kicking today(a few replacement speakers along the way from volume heavy customers:) The highest measured SPL(Sound Pressure Level) system I have installed was in a 1986 Transam, 4-12's in a custom tuned ported box with over 6 cubic feet of airspace, 4-6" midbass speaks and 4-1.5" tweets in factory locations, 3 High current Autotek amplifiers rated at 350 true watts each running at 1 ohm. With the windows up your eyes would blur and breathing was difficult from the amount of air being moved within the vehicle, it was down right sick with an SPL of over 115db. You can compensate for lack of vehicle interior space with shear wattage and speaker cone surface! Haven't had the chance to build a custom system in my Dak yet, just a Pioneer 7300 Head Unit running Infinity Kappas and 10" Pioneer sub driven by MTX amp. Maybe in the springtime I'll get to it and post pics with specs on my website with some of my other installs too. Sorry for the extra long post.

I am a certified professional installer. I have found that when you fire them backwards you get the best sound. You do not get cancellation this way. The best way to show you what cancellation is try rolling the window down if it gets louder you are getting cancellation this usually happens in open cab vehicles with the sub mounted towards the middle of the vehicle.

Hey 96dak, I have a 98 dakota cc and I have two 10" Rockford Fosgate HE2's in the back with a custom built box specifically for those speakers. When reading your statement I was thinking about how my subs will get louder with the windows down and even louder and hit harder with the doors open. I have the box in the back facing forward. What would cause cancellation and would it help it I did what you said and turn them the other way.

yes about 99% of the time I get better response by turning them around. its because the subs are not in the center of the vehicle with 2 ways to go usually when i build these boxes i give about 4 to 6 inches of room between the subs and the back wall. which means you may have to make supports for one side of your box if you find it works in your situation.

THanks guys (was a while since i been on)...
So back is prime.. I will check that out. I can afford the inch or two.
I did find firing it up really sucked.. to the right sounded good (driver to passanger side). and then forward sounded ok, i will flip the box and take a listen (i built it small).
Also. I Have a JL Audio 10w0. I wanted to know what is best. Ported or Sealed. I was reading technical data about the Q's stuff and other things, and how and when and when these #'s are higher than this and that, and i got lost.
Anyone know what is best for those subs? it requires almost 2x space. is it worth it?

I have had great respose with the subs firing upwards I tryed the backside but it rattled to much now I have a custom 2-12 box under the rear jumpers and I hope to get the subs for it very soon when I had my Soundstream SPL 15 in the back I put in at a angle that hit the back seat and the roof so that it would have to focal points and it hit 141.2 on the dash with a ghetto Xplod amp and then the amp fried so I sold the sub and started this latest project with uses a combo of fiberglass and wood and is very stealth yet still has tons of punch unlick the THUNDERFORM's crap. Speaker boxes are so easy to build that if you pay 200 dollars for one then I would feel like I was raped of my cold hard cash.

And then there's guys like me who just want nice deep bass and could care less about bouncing people out of their cars with my bass. :) I'm just happy my Dak HAS 2 10's in it - FINALLY.

I don't understand why it is such an accomplishment to cram two(or more) subs in an area, when you can put one sub that could kill small kids or animals or groove the ear?

2 subs=more cone area,more bass,probably better bass,one sub would be working much harder than two and probably resulting in the amp being turned up higher....but one sub is better than none,especially if the two subs are in an enclosure more suitable for one sub,where they would be starving for space.

Not if you know really know how to work that muscle that you have... More isn't always better, and lastly the amp isn't turned up very high when you have a lower impedence driver... Its all on placement and tuning right...

I am putting 5 orion 12" H2's in my durango and was going to fire them up, then decided to fire them forward. With mine it is a bit different. It is going to be in a wall setup. We will see how loud it is. I am shooting for the 160db range.

I all my experience down and/or back is the best to go. Bass is a long, slow sound wave - so the longer and slower you make it the deeper it sounds. Thus firing them back or down and off something (called "slot loaded") really makes the bass sound deeper.
As far as pure dBs go aim them at the mic and blast away - hey who needs ear drums right? ;P

The low bass is awesome, very DEEP.
But right now I'm trying to figure out an upper bass (50-80Hz) problem, not sure if it's the box or the settings on my amp (eq/crossover). It has alot of distortion almost like the box is flexing which I doubt since it's very tight and soild as a rock. I'm thinking it's my bass eq (+6dB @ 45Hz) on the amp, it might be overdriving the incomming signal and causing it to clip, you just can't hear in the lower frequencies. I need to do some more testing...

Great posts yall, keep em comin. Now onto business.
I have 2 10" Kicker Comp Vrs behind the seat of my regular cab 94 Dak(tight fit with the seat all the way up). I'm in the midst of replacing the factory bench with buckets from a civic and i was going to build a custom console that would hold the two subs...
My question is, what would be the best setup/firing directions for this? My idea was to have one facing up and the other facing forward from the back of the console. Does this seem logical or no? Any suggestions will be helpful.
Also, right now i'm running a cheap ass 500w Legacy amp between the two...I know for a fact that i can get way more power, but i'm not sure on the amp to use...suggestions on this?

That's a tough call because getting two 10" in that space is going to be tight. Firing both down would be ideal since this way you use the box as arm rest instead of your elbow going thru a speaker cone ;) firing back would be the other choice but that is going shake the back wall of the cab pretty good, you'll have to sound proof the he11 out of it if you chose that route.
Amps - only limited by your budget. I run HiFonics amps... always have, always will - they are awesome. Anything would better then that Legacy since it aint putting out anywhere near 500 watts, since (as you know) it's over-ratted junk. Just remember whatever you buy the power will be divided among the two subs and watch the ohm load.
And if anyone else is reading this, then my guess above was right... the gains on my amp were up too high, I backed off them and the sub is hitting much cleaner now. Wish I had more power, but for now 220 watts is fine by me ;)

Thanks JMII..Yeah, it might be a tight fit, but it'll go(hoping!!) For the possibility of stickin and elbow threw the cone i was gonna look at some screens or other kinds of covers...Yeah, i did know about the way overated amp..i've heard a sony xplod 800 hooked up to two 8" jls..it sounded pretty damn good, but i'm not sure on mine...Thanks again for the help, and continue this thread....i'm always lookin for good ideas and i change my mind alot
