Subject: 4.7 Low Oil pressure ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a new 02 QC with 4.7 auto trans and has 150 miles on it. I noticed at warm idle the oil pressure gauge runs about at the 25 psi mark which is at the lower end of the normal range. I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this or should I have this checked? And by the way the oil level is ok all the way to the full mark on the dip stick.
Thanks Mig-29

Perfectly normal as long as the pressure goes back up when you step on the gas. It's just a side effect of the idle being set low (for emissions) that the pump isn't generating much pressure.

I have a 2002 4.7 and have noticed the same thing. So I would have to guess that this is normal.

Well a little follow up. I went to the dealer yesterday and drove another new 4.7 Dak. And it did the same thing, the gauge rode at about the exact same spot as mine at warm idle. So I can only figure that with your replys and with checking the other dak that this is totally normal.
Thanks for your replys.

I have a 2002 durango with the 4.7 engine which always ran with low oil pressure, and with 25000 mile oil pressure would fail completely, when I took it into the dealer for warrenty, they wanted me to produce at least 6 reciepts for oil changes or they would not warrenty the engine. Come to find out this is a hidden problem, and the 4.7 is noted as a sludge produceing engine.I did my own oil changes regularly but didn't keep my reciepts. After disassembleing the engine myself, I find the inside is like an engine with 100,000 miles on it. I was accused of bad maitaince, not true so please be aware of the situation. the 7-70 means nothing/ another wqay for the company to save money!!!

RE: 4.7 oil sludge?!!!

Hello, I am a proud owner of a Dodge Ram with the 4.7 litre V8 engine. I change my own oil with Mobil1 synthetic every 4000 miles. I drive alot and after 1 year I have 34000 miles. At this last oil change I noticed about a 1/2 of a cup of creamy sludge in the oil fill spout mounted on the front of the engine. I panicked and disassembled the spout and cleaned all the sludge. Put my new oil in and began to drive, within 100 miles there is about a tablespoon of sludge in the spout which I cleaned out. It is still producing sludge that I know is going back into the engine. The dealer says that theres nothing they can do and that it wont hurt anything. Is this true? How can I make it stop?
Any suggestions would be more than appreciated.
Chuck in WNY

We purchaced the vehicle from Clinton Ford, Rt. 31 Clinton New Jersey 908-735-7117. Bob is the service manager, Our Warranty is 36,000 or 3 year warranty. About a month ago we took it in for engine knock. Two days later Bob from service called and stated it was not covered by warranty, then he asked for service records for the oil changes to submit to the Chrysler rep.,we replied within an hour. Then 1 1/2 weeks later we spoke to Bob in service and Chris in sales, they stated they would contact Chrysler with our records,.
Two more weeks went by we were never contacted by the dealer, so we called them.Bob stated they never sent the records to Chrysler and and still not covering the warranty and stating his Chrysler rep. is not covering it.They say the engine need to be replaced.
Note: We also have an electrical contracting business, 21 years, we average 9 to 11 vehicles, onsite mechanic for minor repairs we have auto lift,250 oil dispensing drum and auto shop,WE have serviced our own vehicles for the past 7 years,
WE provided our record of oil and filter for the year and 1/2 of 9 changes. We confirmed this day with Chrysler Customer service Regina , 800-992-1997 that they were never sent the records, that a decision was already made that it was not covered. (Maintenance).. They will not provide us with the phone number for the supervisor of Chrysler .
Note:We have bought most of our vehicles through this dealer.
The mileage of the 2002 Dodge Durango is 30,775.we bought it new.

We would appreciate advise

I've seen under my valve covers on my 4.7, while doing the HO cam swap. Clean as a whistle. That was around 20k miles. I've never had the milshake in the filler tube either. Other than living in a warm climate, not sure why not.

Makes me wonder what the oil pan looks like, I have 50,000 now. Oil on the dipstick still looks great, I've never seen my gauge go below half at idle. I use Mobil 1 10-30, wix, or wal mart brand filter, and change 5-7,000.

Mines only got the 3/36 warranty.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

BUT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT NOT BEING COVERED WHILE IT'S UNDER WARRANTY.

If you provided them with the maintenance records indicating timely oil changes, then what's their problem. Seems to me if they have a problem with your company mechanic performing the oil changes that they should be giving the oil changes for free.

Guess it might be time to have a talk with Chris in sales and let him know that they are ruining a future $30,000 truck sale over the poor warranty service.

Chuck, I have exactly the same condition with my 2000 Durango with the 4.7. My mileage is 97000 km.,( about 60,000 mi.) I use only Mobil 1 and change every 5000 km. My oil filler cap is always full of that yellowish crap which I clean out myself once in a while. Three different Chrysler dealers have given me three different vague stories, as I think they have been instructed to do. There is a technical service bulletin out on this condition so they know ALL about it. Drive it til your warranty's up and dump it!

Ok, here'a follow-up to my last post. I finally found a Chrysler dealer who admitted that the oil filler cap location is a problem, in the sense that the PCV valve is located on the side of the oil filler tube and freezes up in cold weather, causing condensation and yellow crap in large quantities inside the cap and tube assembly. This dealer ( Mac Lang in Sundridge, Ontario....yes , it's cold here ) used 1" insulation cut to a template they had designed and used zip ties to fasten it to the front of the filler tube housing, shielding the whole thing from cold air. They said it seems to work great. Three other Chrysler service departments had told me that the yellow sludge is nothing to worry about. WRONG!!!!!!

tptscream, Thanks for the reply. I am wondering if you are having the insulation installed and if you are what your results are. I have talked to alot of people having this problem and none seem to be concerned. I dont know if its there lazy or Im paranoid, but I am sure the water/sludge doesnt extend the life of the engine. I will probably take your advice and run it for another year and trade for a cummins deisel. I do like the truck and would prefer to stay in a dodge. Good luck on your Durango!

Hi Chuck. Yes, Mac Lang Chrysler in Sundridge made the insulated thing and installed it a couple of days ago. Seems to be working well. Apparently, it is an issue in cold weather and when their service manager contacted Chrysler with the problem, Chrysler were very vague and said they were "working on it". Yes, it is very much a problem that is being swept under the rug.
As for me, I love this truck but am not happy with the service departments of most Dodge dealers. ( except of course for good old Mac Lang, the only honest one I've found so far.) Good luck with yours, too!

The 4.7 idles around 650 rpm so it isn't going to have a high pressure at idle using 5w-30 or 10w-30. I used to have a lot of sludge during winter so about once a week I cleaned it out. I put the newer style oil fill cap on and it doesn't appear to be quite as bad.

Help! I have 99 Dodge Durango. It has 86,000 miles & the oil pump, screen & sending unit have been replaced & yet the oil pressure is still fluctuating & check gauges light will come on occasionally. But this only happens when I am stopped @ a light or stop sign & the vehicle is idling. What else could be contributing to the oil pressure flucuating? Any advise offered will be appreciated.

What difference does it make what engine a 1999 Durango has? It's either a 5.2L or a 5.9L and both have the same exact oiling system.
