Subject: 3.9L mileage
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, i am a huge dodge fan, have been all my life. i currently drive a 96 intrepid 3.3L and am proud of the 150k miles i have on her. i do feel however it is time for something new. i am planning on purchasing a dakota in not too long, and am concerned about how long the motor will last. How many miles should i expect to get out of the 3.9 magnum. thank you.

just 124487 miles on mine, and still running good, just got through changing the 02 sensors, and the Water Pump But other than that everything seems to be satisfactory.

Good luck with the purchase.

trans are a hit or miss deal, some have some problems early on others no problems at all.

heat is the down fall of a trans, don,t use the od under 45mph,towing etc and use a trans cooler.

Get a standard, as long as you don't run them out of oil they will last a long time. Like I said in my earlier post 295,000km and still has original tranny and I have not had any problems with it.

Do you still have the original tranny in you Intrepid? My parents had a 94 or 95 and the tranny dumped around 40,000 miles, and my in-laws had one about the same year that dumped at around 95,000 miles. My Dakota is a stick, I think they are less trouble prone (mine has 128,000 miles on it), if you have the vehicle 150,000 to 200,000 miles. I guess sometimes you can get lucky w/ an automatic, the guy I work with has a 92 Grand Caravan with 130,000 miles, original tranny still in it.

The only problem that these engines seem to consistently have are timing chain rattles (do a search on this web page). Now whether or not this means they will break I haven't really heard, I can hear mine rattle now and then, so I'm assuming until the timing is off /runs bad, this is OK, just annoying. The 3.3 in your Intreped is an awesome engine!! Lots of friends have these in their mini-vans with minimal engine probs and good gas milage. Oh yeah, don't expect the same gas milage, my 2 wheel drive, stick 3.9 gets around 14-16 city and 18-20 highway (mostly 19 highway). Its a chopped 318 so its all in all a durable engine.

My Dakota Has taken very hard abuse in the last fiew years and with nearly 150,000 miles on it, in the middle of winter, covered in snow, at -5 degrees she still starts within the second I turn the key.

Was my fathers truck which he bought brand new and I bought it from him. In its entire lifetime we have replaced the exhaust system (Due to NY salt during winter), water pump (Which is a common thing), Timing Chain (which the other guy said), and a clutch (from me smoking the tires too much).

This truck does not owe me a thing.

i have an 89 3.9L dakota with 217000 miles on it. im the second owner and as far as i know the owner before me did no work to it and the only thing that ive done to it is replace the carrier berring and the rear end. my dad knows a guy that works for UPS and he says 3.9L are what they use in thier delivery trucks and the only major work they do to them is replace the timing belt at 200000 miles and they get an average of 400000 out of them, but that is with regular maintainance work every 3000 miles without fail.

Gas mileage is horrible in the 3.9 v6 dakotas. If you have the money, get the v8. You'll see better gas mileage and have more power. I should have just waited and got the v8. I have an 02 dakota sport regular cab 5 speed. Gears are a little whiny and seem to have alignment problems but nothing with the engine so far after 27000.

I have an 87 3.9l with 245,000 and the darn thing just won't stop. I've owned it since it had 197,000 miles on it and it has only given me one problem and that was at 231,000 the alternator went bad but thats nothing. This truck is me and my wife's ONLY vehicle because I'm in tech right now and my funds are low so I need a dependable vehicle. when I get out of school I plan on getting a new one.
