Subject: Won’t shift into 2nd or 3rd till high rp

Message:
2000 3.9L Shifts into 1st and reverse fine. Won’t shift into 2nd
or 3rd till about 3200rpm. Shifts fine into 4th. No lights on.
I’m guessing a speed sensor but the guy at the shop said
there is four?? Not trying to buy all of them!

Sounds like a problem with the throttle valve cable
("kickdown cable"). Check the passenger side of the
throttle body and see if the plastic housing for the
cable broke loose from the throttle body, or if the
cable is stuck.
With engine off, pull the throttle open and the
throttle valve cable (which goes toward the rear of
the engine) should start moving immediately as the
throttle opens.

compared it to another Dakota and it was

and it worked for the test drive!
