 Subject: Bad trans or Trans Shift Solenoid

I checked my transmission oil level and it’s where it is suppose
to be and somedays it would drive well and shift with no
problem and other times it’s seems like the first gear would get
stuck and I’d press ont the gas and it would shift very hard
and while driving on the freeway it would shift at about 65-
70mph and rev up to mid 3s to 4

I’m having a similar issue with my 3.9L 4-speed auto. I’m
aware of mine being a bad overdrive solenoid, so it takes a hot
second to shift from 3 to 4, but I don’t have to try to force it by
any means. It could be that both your primary shift solenoid
and the overdrive solenoid are going bad, but assuming you
still have reverse, I wouldn’t think your trans is ready to give
out just yet. I’d buy a shift improvement kit that includes all
gaskets, solenoids, etc and see have it installed at a good
transmission shop. Another thing you may want to check is
your throttle body. I installed a ported throttle body when I got
my Dakota, and I was having issues where 2nd gear would
shift extremely rough, and would slip out of gear under high
load, and it ended up being the TV cable (the one from the
rear of throttle body to transmission) being too tight. There’s
videos online if you want to figure out how to adjust it if
needed, but generally you want just about 1/16 - 1/16 inches
of play in the cable to get proper shifting and throttle response.
I’d suggest double checking that before paying for any
replacement parts for your transmission. Should you
transmission actually be going out, you can buy them online
for $2000-3000 remanufactured and upgraded to later, more
efficient parts. Might be worth it if the truck is otherwise in
great condition.
