Subject: how much weight can you put in the bed?
IP: Logged

Message:
i have loaded my truck down with 1500+lbs and was on the bumps stops. my truck is lowered 2ins in the rear so i think those 2ins took about 300lbs off the bed capacity?

how bad is this on the rear end to be resting right on the bump stops.

i have done this twice now and the truck feels fine. these are on 300+ mile trips loaded down to the max.

this is on a SLT cc 5.2L

I've had 1950 lbs in my bed...was hauling 25lb bricks for a friend of mine from Lowes to his house (bout 8 miles). It was a scary ride with my 2wd V6. I've heard having it loaded that heavy is really risking snapping the leaf springs, but I've never had anyone confirm that. I could definitely see it being true.

Not to mention it's just plain dangerous...your stopping distance is prolly pretty close to that of a semi when you're that loaded down.

I've had 1800 in my 2001 quad cab. That was the limit that set it on the bump stops. I'm getting ready to put in 2 inch add a leafs which would help that out a little bit. Just make sure that you don't hit any large holes or bumps or you will break a leaf in the pack.

Wow...I wasn't even on my bump stops with 1950 lbs in the bed. Perhaps because I have newer shocks? My stock shocks would have been bottomed out with about 800 lbs in the bed...lol

At one point the other day I was loaded down with a full-sized range oven, microwave oven, 10 small boxes of laminate flooring, and two small rugs on my 04 Quad Cab Dakota. I would imagine I was in the 7-800 pund range. Plus 5 heavy passengers. The rear sagged several inches but still wasn't anywhere near the bump stops. I would imagine I could manage about 5-600 pounds with little to no sag, 1000 pounds with moderate sag, but anything over 1500 would make it a low rider. It's a 04 4x4 Quad CAb 4.7, 5 speed auto. Despite the load the 4.7 still pulled hard. Official payload rating is 1400 pounds.

OK- review a few think here. First, its a half ton truck. 1400 should be you,re max for safty. If you are on the bump stops, you are way overloaded. If you hit a bump or hole, the bumpstop becomes the leverage point of the dead load into your axle housing.Least it will do is a sudden shift of the frame to the front susp. and the most, a bent housing. Finally- Shocks do not support load, just dampen movement. Airshocks help but most mounts are not built to carry loads. Split the load to a trailer or make two trips. Be safe ( oh that word!).

GB2000, I have broken the bottom 2 leaf springs on both sides before. It's not the load that does the harm, it's those nice potholes that shock loads the suspension that does it:)

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Ya, Physics works like that. Weight plus gravity plus distance down equals broke. My RC 03 has a 1850 bed capacity. It should say on your doorjam.

WOW i must be lucky i haven't cracked a lowering block or broke a leaf. i think were bring a trail next time out. Both trips i took with the truck loaded to its max i had to go off the road to get to the spot we like. both times hitting many pot holes.

well the truck doesn't stop in 150ft for 60-0 load maybe more like 280ft 60-0.

that little 5.2 doesn't even know its got an extra 2000lbs on its back.

I think being on the bump stops is BAD as said before.

I have went too far myself a few times. Usually when I say "Give me 25 bags of 80# cement mix!"

I have High Quality air bags on my truck now. 1,000 in the bed wont sag it at all as long as I adjust the air nags. They are good to 5,000 Lbs which is way more than it will ever see!

where did you get that air ride system Graphite?
how hard was it to install?
how much did you pay?
did it help with traction/handle?

Thanks!!

I saw a sweet duster GD that was lifted 6ins with two spoilers off the rear. it was down in Mexico, so maybe the guy ran it in the baja 1000? :-D

I had an S-10 before my Dak.
I asked for a 1000 pound load of gravel.
They put in a full scoop. No telling how much it weighed.
I was on bump stops all the way. The front end floated so bad I could barely steer.
Scariest 30 miles I ever drove.

A half yard of gravel is about 1000 lbs; the bucket on your average size backhoe is usually about 1 yard. I think overloaded springs may be more apt to sag out than snap - but catastophic failure is always a possibility. Log truck drivers near me claim they break more springs hitting bumps with no load (more sudden impact) than loaded.

I Have overloaded my 02 regular cab sport 4x4 with loads of topsoil many times, the largest loads are in the 2200lb range. But anything over about 1700lbs its on the bump stops. What is the best way to increase capacity. Does anyone here have any expirence with Add-a-Leafs? Thanks-Dan

Add-a-leaves or over-load springs are easy to install (need longer u-bolts and/or brackets installed onto frame) You can install cheap over-load springs by going to a junk/salvage yard, and getting a few extra springs from a 1 ton truck or better, cutting them back, and installing them over top of your existing springs. Before you start doing this though, you need to beaf up your frame. These are only "heavy" half ton truck frames, and ANYTHING over 2500# will warp them if the load shifts wrong. You are in a little better shape with a RC, but not much:)

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

I have a "Heavy" 1/2 ton Dodge, cargo capacity
1852 pounds. But 1500 pounds of slide in Camper
put it on the bumps tops. I replaced my bump stops
with Timbren Rear Severe SES. 7000 pound
Progressive springs in gas filled rubber bumper.
Didn't change my ride at all, worked amazing. I
am no longer swaying or dragging my tracks out.
