Subject: Code P0320
IP: Logged

Message:
Today when i was backing out of my driveway, my truck died, then I restarted it and the check engine light came on. I drove straight ot autozone which is 10 miles away and they scanned code P0320. I got the code, went to the 5 star stealership 2 minutes away and told them the code and they said they never heard it. It would be 42 bucks to diagnose the problem and they said i could also disconnect the battery. Then i left to go home and try it and magically my check engine light turned off while sitting at the dealer.

When I got home I went straight to this site and looked up the code. I've seen about 4 threads about it and they all said take it to the dealer right away. Is this something I should worry about for the future now that the check engine light is off?

Thanks

"P0320 is Crankshaft position sensor reference signal cannot be found while the engine is cranking." if it is still running and hasn't tripped the light again i wouldn't worry about it. the crankshaft position sensor is in back of the passenger side cylinder head and goes into the trans bellhousing. not hard to change if you want to. just in case it's going bad.

They all want to use their drb scan tool claim it's more acurate, but unless i'm mistaken the drb displays faults in plain text not "P" codes.Dealerships claim the "P" from scanners and the obd codes from dash don't mean anything to them.

The dealership DRB not only reads the fault codes, but can provide freeze frame data and current condition info as well. The generic p-codes are industry standards while the info from the DRB3 is much more vehicle specific.

DRBIII's will read "P" codes and show plain text all in the same screen when you go to the DTC screen. If you choose "sensors" in the engine menu, you can monitor the crank sensor while cranking or while it is running.

My 2000 durang is jerking forward randomly when i'm at stop
signs and when i try to speed up on the highway. Violent jerks that
shake the whole truck. I got the P0320 code and replaced the
crankshaft position sensor. It was fine the rest of the day after
replacing the sensor, today it's acting up again. Is there some other
problem besides the crank sensor that i can fix?

I got this code this morning after the powerful jerks too. I went to AutoZone and purchased the Crankshaft Sensor for $25. The replacement wouldn't have been too bad had it not been stuck in there so bad. It should of been a 10 minute job, but it took 1 hour with the stubborn old sensor. The code disappeared and is idealing great. We'll see if this did the job after a few days of driving.

I would look at the ground wires on the bottom passenger side of the engine block right around the crank sensor pull wires off clean install star washer and tighten up. see if that helps

Im also having the issue of the p0320 code. I’ve replaced both
the cam and the crank sensors several times since it went
away then came back. I took the new sensors back and
exchanged them for other new ones still keeps coming back.
Then it went to doing the hard jerking thing that’s been talked
about above and now it’s come to where after it gets warm it’s
like it has no power at all. Someone please chime in if you
have fixed this problem in a 02 Dakota 4.7 this has been like 6
months off and on fighting this. I’ve replaced the plug also. I
even went to the junk yard and found a nice sensor on another
truck and tried it.
